I have never had a semi auto shotgun, and was looking at the CZ 712 utility semi auto. What are the thought of the long time shotgun members here? Last shotgun I owned was a Winchester Defender years ago...been over 5 years since I held a shotgun that wasn't issued to me. :)

Most who actually use them find that a quality semi-auto is more reliable in practice. The pump should be in theory, but they depend on the person using it to work right. Doesn't always work that way. I'd take a quality semi over a pump any day.

A properly maintained modern auto is nearly as reliable as a pump. The only real advantage of a pump is that it will keep functioning, even when neglected or very dirty- to a point, and will cylce any round of the proper length, even low recoil light loads. If you want an auto, shoot plenty of your defense ammo to verify function, and keep it clean and lubed.

I use a Remington 1100 as my go to HD shotgun. I trust my life to it and have never had a jam.

Most people say "Pump because a semi-auto might jam."

I've seen that it's 50/50 for people that use pumps and semis and most don't think that.

My primary HD shotgun is a semi auto. The one that is second in line is a semi auto. I have pumps I could use but choose the semis over them.

I'll take my Saiga 12 with 20 round drum over my Mossberg 500 pump with 6 round capacity anyday for home defense...
