I just found out today that IRS Investigation Agents are issued weapons!

IRS CI SERVICE WEAPONS

CI agents are appropriately armed to perform their law enforcement duties. The standard issue CI service weapon is the Sig Sauer Model 228 nine millimeter semi-automatic pistol.122 This is the same service weapon currently provided to ATF and Secret Service agents.123 U.S. Customs agents are provided with the same caliber weapon made by Smith & Wesson.124 The FBI issues the larger Glock .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol.

So what other service weapons do you know that are issued and by what dept.

The SIG P226/9 in .40 is issued to the SFPD, Alameda County Sheriff and my home town of Fremont's Police Dept
CHP is the S&W 4006TSW

Growing up, my Scoutmaster was an IRS investigator. He carried a "non-issue" Browning .25. I wonder if they had an actually carry piece back in the 1960s and 70s?

One of my neighbors just got into U.S.Customs...I asked about his sidearm and could of swore he said: "HK in a .40SW"...Anyway, I might of heard wrong..

Medicare fraud investigators who work for Department of Health and Human Services are also armed.

A few years ago, the IRS asked to be allowed to carry SMG's but were turned down because they couln't show any need for that kind of firepower.

Still, some of the folks the IRS encounters are not little old ladies who put a decimal point in the wrong place. They are nasty folks who are lying on their taxes about what is sometimes called "ill-gotten gains" and really don't care for people asking about the sources of said gains. And, lest we forget, they are federal LEOs'. The agency that is now under DOJ as the BATFE was once part of the IRS, since the original NFA and FFA were ostensibly revenue raising measures.

Local ATF is issued P229s in .40

Local SS is issued P229 in 357

Local FBI, DEA, USMS are issued Glocks in .40

Local ICE is issued P229 in .40

Local CBP is issued HK P2000 in .40

City gets Glock 9s, county Glock 40s, state Glock 357s (but switching to S&W M&P357s)

The collections arm of the IRS carries... friend of mine is one...

Knowing him since high school.... very scary stuff...

The EPA and FDA also have armed agents. Just a couple of the over 30 federal agencies that have armed personnel. Heck, the Dept. of Health and Human Services even has a SWAT team.

Ok, does anyone find it interesting that government agents with only minor security risk are now issued firearms? Why? Do they have arrest powers, IOW, can they arrest someone on the spot? Is it because they might have to go into high crime areas and need personal protection? It might be easier to list the government agencies that do not arm their personnel.

My son's future father in law is a Federal Air Marshal that carries a Sig P228 and has special ammunition of course.

Arizona DPS officers are issued P226's. Avondale Police Officers are issued P220's.

I've seen Phoenix PD with full-sized Glocks. Probably 17 or 19, but I don't know for sure.

I can confirm BigMike's post. I met an Air Marshal at a tailgate party. Said he was issued a P228. Also said it was one of the most boring jobs he ever had. Pfff. I guess I could see that.

US Customs gave up S&W about 1998 when they adopted Glock 17/19/26.

There really isn't a US Customs anymore there is:

Customs and Border Protection Officers- These folks do the inspections among other things. They are changing over to the SIG 40s from legacy Customs Glocks and INS H&K.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement-They do the investigations and are making teh same change to SIG as CBP.

What do you consider minor security risk? IRS,EPA, Dept of Agriculture, H&HS, and other Federal agencies do criminal investigations and have authority to arrest without warrants. The types of cases they do routinely involve BGs that are making a lot of money doing what they are doing with long prison sentences if they get caught.

Yes, there are a lot of Federal agencies that arm their agents and officers. Shouldn't they be at least as well armed as the public?

Close Griz - CBP officers are issued H&KP2000LEM.40. This summer the G17s are going away.

That's correct, I got the issue confused with ICE. I don't need to keep close tabs on such things anymore.

I don't understand why some people get so worked up about IRS criminal investigators carry firearms. If I was about to arrest someone who didn't report his millions in drug dealing profits, I sure would want to be armed. The IRS employees who audit little old ladies are not CI and are not armed.

A lot of things scare me about the IRS, but their sidearms aren't among them. I'd gladly take a 9mm slug over a superpriority tax lien! In fact back in law school I would have taken a slug over another semester of Tax law. The IRC is so outrageously complex not even lawyers can understand it anymore.
