I just purchased an H&R Topper Deluxe Classic (heavy, ribbed barrel, 3" chamber) in 20 ga. and shot it for the first time today. Not a bad gun overall, except that in 2 rounds of trap I had three occurrences in which the discharged shell casing would not eject, and required (very) gentle encouragement with a rod to tap it out. The ejector seems fine; the spring seems strong and the other shells ejected crisply. I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this and can comment on whether it indicates a problem with the gun, ammo (Winchester Super X game loads) or just a new-gun issue that will work itself out with time.

Thanks for any help,
Monty

Try different ammo and see how things go. Winchester ammo seems to get a lot of bad ink right now.

I have a pardner in .410 that won't eject anything that's not high-brass, regardless of how clean the chamber is. So, considering the amount of use it gets, high-brass it is. Come to think of it, most of the commercial .410 loads I've picked up have been high-brass with the exception of S&B.

Coincidence?

are the 20 you shooting smooth shell? had a o/u that would not eject smooth case, went to ribed case no problem

Give the chamber a good cleaning and see if that helps. Sometimes a bit of gunk in the chamber can cause extraction problems.

If that fails, try Federal or Remington ammo.

The chamber needs polish. Get a 1/2 inch dowel spilt it and insert a strip of 400 grit doubled up and long enough to put pressure on the chamber, lube it with WD40 and run it back and forth for 2 minutes with your electric drill, clean thoroughly and re-lube with you usual lube. Try it I bet the problem is gone.
