Subject: [Sheriff-North] Safety at shopping centers

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office would like to encourage citizens to be cautious in shopping center parking lots. When walking through parking lots or loading purchases into your car from a shopping cart, be aware of your surroundings. Don't leave your purse unattended while shopping or loading your car. Ask store employees for an escort if you are not comfortable walking alone to your car.

Our office has noticed a few incidents in recent months involving suspects driving up to a victim in a parking lot and snatching her purse -- either out of her hand or out of her shopping cart. While these incidents are few and far between, we hope you will take extra precautions to prevent becoming a victim of this type of theft.

This reflects the oncological spread of crime from the urban areas to the foothills of the Rockies.

Got gun?

Sage advice! I have my head on a swivel when I'm in a mall parking lot, especially covered or underground lots. I always leave my gun hand free. If someone is approaching me on the same side as the lane I'm in I move to the other side. After we've passed each other I take a quick look back to make sure they haven't swapped ends and are headed back in my direction.
