I have a pound of Pyrodex, and a pound of Goex which I want to ship to the person who buys my currently advertised 1858 Pietta .44 on this forum---how can I do that? --- I know that UPS and FedEx ship black powder, but what sort of declaration do you need to make so that the shipment is legal...?

Thanks, Dave

I assume we're talking about BP substitutes, not BP. Pyrodex is a substitute, and Goex makes many as well. Shipping real BP is a bit trickier.

IIRC, a substitute would need to be declared ORM-D and marked properly. There may also be some kind of weight restrictions. I would call the carrier and ask. Don't bother asking the drones at the shipping office, since they'll likely tell you it's a felony to ship the cap from an empty triple-seven can.

While Goex makes a substitute (Pinnacle), I suspect he is talking about the real deal Goex makes. However, I found this on this page: Neither UPS nor FedEx Ground will accept a blackpowder package from any business or individual, whether for shipment or for return, who does not hold a current UPS hazardous material shipping license.

Sounds like it may be more trouble than it is worth.

The Fedex man brought me three pounds of Goex FFFg today from grafs.com, with nothing more than a $20 hazmat fee.

Found this too:

Because the U.S. Department of Transportation, Code of Federal Regulations, 49CFR Part 172, Subpart H, mandates training for all individuals involved in the transportation of hazardous materials.

FedEx offers the course for only $150 online. ;)

It seems like the company who sends it via FedEx/UPS needs to be certified.

DOT HAZMAT training

Anyone involved in shipping HAZMAT is required by the DOT to have been trained, and proof of training; whether that person is filling out paperwork, transporting it, or simply making the box to ship it!

Thanks for the information

I did mean the real deal Goex blackpowder....and I think that I will forego the pleasure of attempting to ship it....the Pyrodex RS could be shipped apparently....I really appreciate the help and expertise...

Smokeless is just ORMD though, isn't it?
ORM-D Cartridges Small Arms is a designation that allows a limited quantity (I forget the exact amount) of loaded small arms ammunition to be shipped without being declared.

Smokeless powder and conventional primers get a HAZMAT fee and are not treated like ammo.

I guess this is a dumb question, but why would anyone go to the trouble, hassle and expense of shipping a lousy couple of pounds of powder?

If it makes you feel better, knock the cost off the price of the gun, but let the buyer get his own powder.

How True

I was seeking information as to what kind of hassle and expense it was, having figured that out with the help of the forum, I actually did exactly what you suggest, discounted the gun and accessories...those two "lousy pounds" are still around, am not certain what to do with them, since I sold my only blackpowder weapon.

That is easy - buy another black powder firearm! All the scientists say that those who have become addicted to smoking (black powder smoke, that is) can't quit.
