I have a friend that use to live in town that I reloaded for and now he has moved to a different state and he wants me to load up 1000 45 ammo for him and was unsure of the rules on shiping loaded ammo. I was planing on using usps priority mail but don't want to get in any trouble if the box breaks open or get anyone hurt if a round goes off since sometimes the postal service beats the crap out of the packages. Any ideas???

I think you just need to slap one of these on it to cover the liability from your end (IANAL):

I've never shipped or received ammo though USPS though, always UPS ground.

USPS does not ship ammo. Period. Use UPS or Fedex. Let them know it's ammo and they'll tell you what, if anything, extra you need to do.

Ya' know how they usually now ask at the PO if you're shipping anything potentially dangerous?

Ammo would be one of those things. Don't do it.

As previously stated, Fedex Ground or UPS.

Don't forget to mark the box ORM-D.

How do I get the ord-m sticker. I haven't shipped anything like live ammo before only car parts and such

I guess I could just print out the one that is posted here I didn't know I didn't need a real sticker or if I had to fill out any paper work

Never USPS for Ammo or anything related to firearms
I have recived Fedex and UPS for shipped guns and ammo which i bought online

UPS is the way to go

I just shipped a bunch of boxes of ammo to various parts of the country within the last few weeks. UPS is the best way to go, hands down. As others have posted, you need to have ORM-D in a rectangle, along with the words Cartridges, Small Arms on the outside of the box. I simply made my own on the computer, printed it out and taped it onto the box with clear packing tape.

If you use UPS, you CANNOT go to one of their UPS Stores. You have to either go to a designated shipping center, or you can call them for pickup. Pickup will cost you an extra $5 or $6, but IMO its well worth it instead of driving to a center, which in my case was 40 minutes away. In fact, I was able to print my own labels, tape them on, schedule a pickup...all online. Easy peasy.

One last word...I live in PA. Check the laws of your state before scheduling a pickup.

Good luck.

. . and here we go again, redact.png redact.png redact.png

By law, you can send any firearm or part of a firearm except for handguns and the handgun receivers via the US postal service if you do not hold an FFL. The recipient must be legally able to receive said firearms and/or parts.

Not even FFL holders can ship ammunition via USPS.

Write ORM-D SMALL ARMS CARDRIGES on the package and ship it from a distribution center instead of a small store. It won't cost you all that much more. Make sure you pack it well as UPS treats their packages worse than potatoes. Don't want the bullets to seat too far into the case because of impact.

I here that UPS is the way to go, but the other day I had my first experience with them. I was trying to ship a wooden stock back to sender and the branch manager said they were not authorized to send fire arm parts. I told them I had received them from them the manager replied that as a franchize they had to agree not to ship firearms parts. Went through 3 different stores until finally one did. Person working was an ex-cop and had no problems doing it. He now gets all my business regardless of how far I drive.

We have a very good thread on this and a search of ORM-D should get it for you in short order. As you've been told, you have to use a commercial shipper and you have to package securely and you have to use the ORM-D sticker on the sides of the outer package (the old thread has an image you can print off).

Funny thing regarding the ORM-D sticker.

I received some ammo a few months ago from CMP and while they had the sticker, the wording was "consumer commodity" rather than "ammo, small arms".

Since then that's how I label any I ship. I figure if the gov't does it that way it must be correct. That's my story and I'm sticking with it. :uhoh:

You can NOT use the USPS system.

You -can- use UPS if the package is properly marked (ORM-D, small arms ammo) AND you take it directly to a UPS manned (not Office Depot or Staples or Kinkos or Mailbox place) shipping center.

Failure to properly mark, or to ship via the Post Office is very bad ju-ju, and will earn you significant time as a guest of the state at the Hotel Greybar.

1. You can just write ORM-D you don't need a nice sticker.
2. If you want a nice sticker the UPS customer center will have one, unless you get them to pickup instead.
3. "ORM-D" would be enough, don't need "ORM-D small arms cartridge".
4. UPS over fedex.

not trying to create a zombie thread, but can I get some updated information on how to ship live ammo now that ups won't do orm-d? Can I use fedex? and will they hit me with an extra charge for orm-d?

"Effective January 1, 2011 UPS will no longer accept hazardous materials, including, but not limited to Consumer commodity, ORM-D and combustibles, via UPS Ground service to and from Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Catalina Island. All regulated materials not requiring shipping papers in Air or Ground transport, must be prepared according to air regulations when destined to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Catalina Island via UPS Ground service." - http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/resources/ship/hazardous/variations.html

You can continue to ship ammunition via UPS Ground.....just not to those destinations because the trucks get stuck in the sand before they even hit the water.

well I feel dumb. how did I copy that whole thing in and not read and retain the parts about offshore locals. thanks guys.

You can also use Fedex Home Delivery. I have found Fedex to be much easier to use shipping ammo. Call them up, set up an account which is easy to do-- answer a few questions and they open your account. No fees, no minimums, no extra charges.

When you need to ship ammo, they have an on-line system kinda like USPS that lets you print shipping labels and schedules a pickup the following day. Driver comes to your door, picks up ammo, off it goes.
