Shootin from the hip.

If you really want to shoot from the hip -- and hit your target -- get a laser. One of the advantages of a laser is that you don't have to have the gun on a position to use the sights in order to have aimed fire.

Give this a try:

(not a speed drill)

After drawing with your strong hand rest the point of your elbow ON your hip--you may have to scrunch up to do this if you are over weight. walk around the house. You will notice your hips stay at a pretty even elecation, and you can use this to index your environment. Its possible with practice, to draw and engage targets at a less than casual pace from the hip. Maybe its not tactical but it will sure impress your friends.

On Close retention: in order to keep from shooting yourself accidently another trick is to push your weak elbow out, your fist of your weak hand in your chest or strong shoulder as you draw and engage, keeping your muzzle slightly down. Enagage, backing away and transitioning to a two handed hold.

CWL....there is a basic rule of combat when armed with a handgun..charge a gun and run from a knife. But.....moving in while punching bullets into the BG ( along with muzzle gases when you get really close) may make a knifer think twice about cutting you. Or at least slow him down...
Al..indeed one may use his free hand to fight the BG when up close. Not to mention useing the handgun as an impact weapon. ( Which is another reason to move in, so when your gun is empty you can still engage with H2H or gunstrikes..or both)

Matthew,

In combat, you don't think at all but revert to training reflexes or terror response -I know, I've experienced an ambush during patrol.

Muzzle blast from a pistol isn't gonna make me stop & theorize while performing my knife/HTH moves. I am already commited to the action and am in pure motor response mode. You may shoot me, but I'm gonna cut & cut & cut you.

Running away is not shameful.

I incoorporate hip shooting and retention shooting into my training. With practice, not all that much actually, reasonable results can come rather quickly.
