Just hitting the news services now. Took deputies gun in court and opened fire. Of course, there would be no armed attorneys etc in the courtroom because that would be against the law.

TexasSIGMan beat me to it, but I just heard the breaking news story, too. Don't have many details yet. Sounds like perhaps it was a defendant in a criminal case that snagged a Deputy's weapon.

Brady Bunch probably already dancing, though

Just another reasons to allow citizens to carry anywhere. While it will not stop all shootings it will stop a lot of them, or at the very least cut them short before many are injuried or killed.

I mean right now in most places if someone decides to start a shooting rampage, the only way for it to end is a) then run out of ammo, or b) the cops show and kill them. Until that point it is open season on the masses. Now if those "targets" could shot back it would be a whole different ballgame.

Just heard (9:52 AM, EST 3-11-05) that it was the defendant in a rape case that snagged the Deputy's weapon, killed the judge, wounded 2 other deputies, and escaped from the 8th floor courtoom, jacked a car once outside and is now on the run.

another one....judge killed in Atlanta

Well, another shooting involving a judge. Atlanta, at this point, according to MSNBC (0900 CST 3/11), a judge dead and one or two sheriff's deputies wounded. Guy evidently was in court (presumably as a defendant) and managed to get a deputy's sidearm.

We had nearly the same thing happen in Milwaukee a year or so ago. The defendant grabbed a deputy's gun, but another deputy shot the man to death before he could do serious harm to anyone. There were people darn near starting race riots over it to boot. :cuss:

Judge, three others shot inside Atlanta courthouse

ATLANTA (AP) — A judge and three other people, including at least one deputy, were shot inside and outside the Fulton County Courthouse in downtown Atlanta on Friday morning, authorities said.
The judge was shot on the eighth floor of the courthouse, while a deputy was shot on a street corner just outside the building, said Officer Alan Osborne with the Atlanta Police Department.

Authorities did not immediately identify any of the victims. However, Fulton County spokeswoman Jessica Corbitt said it was believed that the judge who was shot was Fulton County Superior Court Judge Rowland Barnes.

Grady Memorial Hospital reported that two deputies were being treated at the hospital. It was not immediately known the extent of their injuries.

"I saw one person on the street that they were perfoming CPR on," said court reporter Amy McKee.

District Attorney spokesman Erik Friedly said the shootings started shortly after 9 a.m. on the building's eighth floor.

Witnesses said the suspect carjacked a car and authorities were searching for several vehicles reported stolen in the area.

All the judges in the building were locked in their chambers. The courthouse and other buildings in downtown Atlanta were on lockdown. Traffic in the blocks surrounding the courthouse was backed up as police cruisers flooded the area looking for the suspect.

Judge Barnes recently sentenced former Atlanta Thrashers player Dany Heatley, who pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide in the death of a teammate.

murder x 3
attempted murder x 1
unlawful flight
illegal possession of a firearm during a felony
car jacking x many

do you suppose he could also be guilty of the rape he is charged with?

I really wouldn't mind at all if we started HANGING people like this again. A gallows in the town square....

without knowing many facts, I just hafta wonder how a guy can manage to shoot a judge, go from the 8th floor to street level and shoot 2 deputies along the way and still be alive to carjack somebody. Are there really so few deputies/officers in a courthouse at 9am that there was nobody there to stop this dude? Of course you have to wonder how this would have turned out if, lets just say, 10% of the people in that building were allowed to carry. :uhoh:

I sure hope they catch this bastard quick! If they need some rope I have a bunch in my shed. :)

By the way I am sure that the bunch of idoits over at brady would be jumping for joy over this, if it did not involve the theft of a firearm from a cop by a criminal in a "gun-free zone". It really goes to show that gun free zones are in reality as many have pointed out "criminal protections zones", :barf:

Do you think they'll let him off if he comes back to the Courthouse in his PJ's  .

I have a feeling that he's not going to survive the day. Hopefully he won't take out any more innocent people along the way :( .

Yeah, you have to wonder....although I don't wonder at the fallout that's started already. After interviewing one FBI profiler "expert," MSNBC gets a retired judge out of bed, and of course she immediately decides that there should be no guns allowed at all in the courthouse. Like that's a panacea....evidently she never heard the statement "There are no dangerous weapons, only dangerous men."

Officials: Judge killed in courthouse shooting
Friday, March 11, 2005 Posted: 10:21 AM EST (1521 GMT)

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- A defendant stole a weapon from a deputy and shot and killed a judge at the Fulton County courthouse Friday morning, officials told CNN.

TV reports said a court reporter and two deputies may also have been shot.

Atlanta police spokeswoman Marion Lee said one person was shot in the courthouse parking lot and another was shot outside the courtroom, reportedly on the eighth floor of the courthouse.

Officials said police were seeking a suspect who was on the loose in downtown Atlanta. The suspect may have tried to carjack several vehicles, reports said.

CNN is now advising Atlanta residents to go home, lock their doors and remain inside until the suspect is caught.

Gee, and some people actually wonder why I went through the hassels of getting the judges and bailiffs to allow me to carry in the Courthouse...

Hmm... Another shooting.

Just goes to show how much safer we'd be if only law enforcement were legally allowed to carry. Oh, wait...

This POS is on his third car jacking.

I hope the next one he car jacks has a gun.

May the Judge and the deputies R.I.P.

May God be with their families

I know it's all been said but I'd bet that one or two other carry folks would have probably put this idiot down - even before he got to harming others. Plus - extreme bad that he was able to snag a Dep's gun too.

Be thankful this wasn't another ''AK incident".

No, but I bet it doesn't take long for them to start spewing about the need for "smart gun" technology again.

Any idea what kind of gun the deputy may have been carrying, and how many rounds might be left?

Also, why is there always violence in areas around "MLK" this and that? ;)

I hope this scum takes his own life and saves the taxpayers tons of money. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of the true victims in this situation.
