I have a Savage Axis .30-06 that I got for a heck of a deal. Cut to 17", and am currently deciding on a permanent optic for the rifle so I can get it out and get some groups at 100. When I put a spare scope on it to test at 30 yards (don't have my 100 yard bench up yet), I got one hole, so that's promising I guess.
Not much of a fireball with 180 grain loads, but it's certainly loud. But the rifle, without an optic, weighs somewhere around 6 pounds. It's very quick, and very convenient to carry around.
