Hello All
New to reloading & getting into it not to save money but tired of ammo shortages, plus I am sure I will really enjoy it.
However I am having trouble finding small rifle primers, large rifle primers and powder.
Looking for Hodgdon Varget & IMR 4064 & IMR 4227
Is there a shortage of just about everything? Do you all expect short term or long term shortage?
Do you think this is all related to Covid (factories closed) or to all the demonstration turmoil & panic buying?
Funny thing is I just ordered a bunch of reloading stuff, press, dies, tumbler etc and did a lot of researching all but just assumed primers, powder, & bullets easy to get.
Pretty frustrating

I keep watching a bunch of sites every day to look for restock.

Midway, Brownells, Powder Valley, Midsouth Shooter's Supply, Graf's and Natchez are my usual sites I visit looking for components.

Be ready to pounce on items as they come in stock and be prepared to pay shipping + hazmat. Buying powder and primers together will help save on both.

I personally expect it to be like this at least through the election. Could be much longer. I don't think it'll be shorter.

You have to watch online like a hawk and react quick if you hope to get anything at all now. At this point you can’t be picky on powder or primers. CCIs are my favorite but I bought Federal and Winchester because of quantity limits and lack of selection. Study reload manuals and have all possible powders written out so you can quickly search and jump on what you find. It’s crazy to think how December of ‘19 the shelves were full everywhere.

Unfortunately for you, your timing to start reloading is not so great. Those of us that have been doing it longer are well stocked. Just keep vigilant and continue to peruse the reloading websites and if they allow for you to notify you when they have the supplies sign up for notifications and jump on the opportunity to buy immediately. If you wait 30 minutes or longer it is a very good possibility that their inventory will be sold out again. I remember waiting a couple of years for my Forster Press, and when I was notified I bought it. I called a friend to let him know immediately after I ordered mine and by the time he tried they were sold out. Act fast and have the money set aside for what you need, if you have to think about it, by the time you have made a decision it can be to late. Especially now under this pandemic, when people are frightened and are panic buying everything on sight.

I’ve had good luck calling local stores and asking when they restock. If the truck comes at 5AM on Mondays, then I get there when the doors open on Monday and get what I need.

You need to be aware that millions of people, in order to guard their 10 year supply of toilet paper, have laid in a matching 10 year hoard of ammunition. Bottom Line: Election years are not typically good years to begin a hobby in any part of shooting sports. You must be new here, because it's been that way since the mid-90's.

My advice to you is to save your money and wait for the Black Friday sales which will be after the elections. Your money will be able to purchase 2 or 3 times what you can buy right now.
