So, I'd been considering a FS2000 as my next rifle for some time. Found out one of my coworkers had access to one so I arranged a little range trip.
Turned out he had a FS2000 Standard. The stock optic wasn't too bad, but the lack of illumination makes me eliminate it as a possibility.
My impressions:
1) The trigger wasn't as bad as all the detractors made it out to be. The first stage was pretty junky and mushy feeling. But once it hit the second stage it broke pretty cleanly and the reset point was easy to find. I've seen ARs that had triggers I liked less.
2) One malfunction out of ~50 rounds. I took my first shot and then the trigger went mushy. I pulled the CH back and it came back freely about 1/3 of the way then stopped. Having read around the FN Forum a little I stopped tugging on the CH, pulled the mag out, then ran the CH thru the full range. 3 cartridges dropped out of the mag well. I inserted a new mag and kept shooting. The mag in question had a popped seam and was barely retaining rounds. I crushed it flat and trashed it.
3) It was weird not having any case ejections and then seeing 6 empty brass dribble out the front. Mag changes were pretty natural too, weak hand goes to the armpit, trip the mag latch and pull down. Probably not going to be as fast on mag changes as a AR, but then again, what is?
