I have noticed that the price in ammo is going up. I am planning on buying a 9mm hand gun and a maybe a CX4.

Would it be wise to start hoarding ammo now before the price goes up?

Ammo pricing have been spiking up for 6 months now. For the most part (with two noticable exceptions) my gun money is going to ammo and mags.

I figure ammo isn't likely to get cheeper anytime soon, so I'd rather stock up on it than more weapons if funds are limited (which they are).

Ammo is cheaper when you buy it in bulk so if you want it cheap then "stockpiling" it is just a side effect.

Think of it is buying "ammunition futures"

I have also pondered this, and have a small reserve, but everytime I shoot it dents it, but I can't justify being one of those guys with 100's of guns and thousands of rounds of ammo but never shoots. I am getting a reloader and hope that will help me build reserves as I can pick up range brass and turn someone elses waste into my own treasure.

What you don't have a stockpile yet? Hasn't this site taught you anything?
Raise your hand if you don't have a stockpile.

rifle--1k per caliber +500 for each additional rifle of same caliber
22LR--min 5k
handgun--3k per caliber +1k per for each additional gun of the same caliber
2 boxes of self defense per gun, the rest for~whatever (target/plinking/practice/replicating SD rounds, etc)
stockpilen is having more than this IMHO. often about 1/2 of this is in the form of reloading inventory, assembled stock changes with the seasons

After i get my tax check, im planning to buy a case of 7.62x54r 7.62x39 possible case of 9mm and a case for what ever pistol i buy

Should I stockpile ammo?

In a word, YES. (See post #10). From a conversation with my local gun/ammo dealer, I anticipate yet another ammo price increase soon.

Moreover, you may want to consider reloading. I have spent more on reloading components in the past six months than I have on either firearms or ammunition.

Greetings Rumplestiltskin. Glad to have you around.

Sorry...I just couldn't resist. Are you a new shooter? If so, welcome to our "disease". If not, then....wow...you must have had one helluva stash to just now have noticed ammo prices skyrcketing! :D

If you are a shooter who shoots lots and is convinced the prices will only keep going up and up, it may not be a bad idea. But don't go into debt for it, that's silly.

If you aren't a shooter and just want a big pile of ammo "just in case" it most likely isn't worth the expense.

Yes. I also respectfully request that you instruct your spouse to sell your ammo stash in a yard sale or flea market after your passing. I hit yard sales and flea markets from time to time and I've never seen anything gun related. That must stop.
