Sorry to make two posts so soon after joining but I am a long time lurker and did some searches and couldn't find anything on this and have always thought about it.

I have always had a dillema with showering with no pistol, I tend to wrap my cheap revolver in a towel and keep it on the chest in my bathroom while I shower.

I also take my gunsafes key in with me in the same towel. I don't wanna go against my own guns some freak got in to as he broke in.

However I always consider if a house hider or intruder were to burst in to the bathroom and attack me while I am in the shower, I would have to face him unarmed, possibly against a knife or ballbat etc.

I keep a cold steel punch dagger in an extra large soapdish in the shower, having done some boxing I am pretty sure I could handle myself with it, and I don't know how to use/retain a regular knife, so it seems like a decent option. But I am curious if any others have any inventive shower ideas?

I have considered a cheap small revolver in a ziplock bag in a large plastic cup etc, but of course rust and primers are a concern.

Can't really say, myself. I lock up my "nightstand" pistol (in a nylon snaptop holster with an extra mag pouch on the holster) during the day, but since it's still out until I put it back in the safe, I'll keep it nearby in the morning. Frequently I'll stick that package on the bathroom counter when I take a shower before work. I don't expect trouble but it didn't seem a bad idea to me to keep it available until I leave for work in the morning.

More along the lines of what you were asking, for when you are IN the shower... I know a retired narcotics cop who had other friends in the LE business with concerns about revenge-seeking ex-cons who he'd helped put away. His friend, he said, put his Glock in a plastic baggie when he'd bathe in case someone came for him while he was in the shower.

I think a good zip-lock baggie would work fine, just test it out with wrapping something the size of your handgun in paper towels and putting it in the zip-lock to see if the paper towels get wet while you take a practice shower.. If they don't then you can be sure you've got the right zip-lock bag for the job.

Carrying in the shower? Does this cross the line from readiness to paranoia?

I hope you have a secure lock on the bathroom door and use it. otherwise the intruder will have your weapon before you know he is there.

Yeah well most people think carrying a gun at all is stupid and paranoid.

Are you saying as you take a shower it is impossible for someone to burglarize your house and end up attacking you?

This isn't "5 marine trained gang members in body armor storming through the door 1 in a million chance for no reason" I am talkin here. I am asking a serious question, what do you do when someone gets in your house while you are in the shower, and comes through the bathroom door to have their way with you? Assuming you can't up and move to Beverly Hills or roundhouse kick them and put them in a ufc armbar?

At some point laughing at this minor chance of it happening, is the same as laughing at the idea someone is gonna drive in to the resturant you are eating in and start shooting.

How many people are killed in their bathtub every year, vs in a public shooting?

I bet it is a higher instance. Defense anytime, isn't a bad idea in my book, is it in yours?

Depends. Who do you call to schedule your emergencies for a time and place that's convenient for you?

this thread is stupid.
Then provide and intelligent answer to it, or move along.

Anyone who says they keep a gun nearby at home should have an answer for what happens with that pistol when they're bathing. See this thread for a recent instance where proximity to a good defensive tool could have made all the difference if the victim had gotten into the shower:
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=448157

For me, I fold a pistol into a towel. Keep in mind you've got other tools at hand even without a gun; it would take true grit for someone to carry on an attack with a soaped up naked guy flying at them. Shower curtain, toilet tank lid, soap in the eyes, etc.

It ain't the gun, so much as Software.

What I have had, while traveling and staying in hotels, motels and condos, and folks have come in, from staff, my lady partner, another member of team, and "wrong room" :

Gov't Model of 1911, Steel Colt Combat Commander, with USGI/Colt 7 round mags, and hardball.
Model 29 (.44 mag)with full hose hard cast loads.
Model 24 (.44 special)
Browning High Power with 124 grain hardball
Model 19, 66, Model 10, 36, 37, 042...
I had the Model 64 3" RB HB the last time in FL in a condo...

Kel-Tec P-11 with 124 gr FMJ the last time, house sitting, for a single mom and she came home, and her daughter ran in, banged on the door, with a "I gotta pee really bad!"

Yeah I look great in a ladies long terry cloth robe, with shampoo in hair and still soapy at 11 pm.

Single moms laugh, and little daughters get a case of giggle snorts.
No rubber ducky's were kilt during this event...

Attacks in the shower do happen but I am glad that those of you who scoff, have the luxury of selecting the time and place that you may be attacked.

Being prepared is not paranoid. Recently there has be a thread posted here asking who carries while at home; is a shower not at home? There was another thread talking about a break in that if it would have been 60 seconds earlier they would not have heard anything because they were in the shower. And mcdonl, this was in a nice neighborhood.

Why is this any different than asking; "Do you carry while mowing the lawn?" or "Where do you put your gun when snoozing in the recliner?"

I think that you need to really stretch your imagination to consider someone who is thinking about protecting themselves where and when they might be vulnerable to be paranoid.

Everybody has to draw the line somewhere. Maybe stashing a gun in the shower works for your threat level, maybe not. If I was showering in Fallujah, I'd want a SAW in the stall with me. In suburban CT, not so much.

Let's face it, most of us are in far more danger from what we ate for lunch today than from somebody sneaking into the shower (spouses excluded).

I'm thinking some people may be channeling Janet Leigh a little too much, and some not quite enough ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbH0wp_2vPQ ). We need to strive for a happy medium here.

That is not a request, by the way.

We treat serious questions with serious demeanor here. If you can't participate in a mature and responsible fashion, please don't bother to waste electrons.

It may be that some things brought up here are not high on any list of probabilities. As long as the poster is serious and the question is within the bounds of reason, we will discuss it to the degree it can be managed.

But people who want to play on the Internet need to go elsewhere. S&T is not the place for that.

I'm now going to go prune this thread back to some semblance of reasonability...

Of course the naysayers are right- there is no possible way anyone could be attacked in the shower, it’s physically, legally, and morally impossible. Anyone who thinks otherwise is obviously delusional and paranoid.

When I get in the shower the Kahr CW9 I carry with me at all times goes in a sealable Tupperware container and sits on the floor of the shower. Works fine.

I initially thought the idea was ridiculous, but until fairly recently I thought the idea of carrying at home was, too.

I now carry at home. Why? The layout of my house is such that, in the very unlikely event of a sudden break in, there's just no other reasonable defense.

Shower? Never had me worried until this thread came up.

How about a stainless steel pistol in a waterproof camping bag containing desiccant, within reach but as far from water spray as possible?

I would be inclined to go over it with WD40 regularly.

Now you have me thinking about it....

Not sure about now, but a friend waaaayy back yonder had a stainless .38SPl revolver for "Shower Duty". He had an extra partially-recessed soap dish installed in the shower, and it was covered with a kind of 'mini shower curtain'.

He did change out ammo every 1st of the month, as a 'just-in-case...'

My nightstand is just outside the door to the bathroom. I always lock the bedroom door and leave the bathroom door open (mostly to let steam out...small bathroom). It's only 3 steps from the shower to the gun.

Besides, when I'm in the shower I have instant access to a large bludgeon anyway. You know, the shampoo bottle

I apologize for some of the bullies here who are not looking for information or looking to give information but are chomping at the bit to bad mouth someone with a legitimate question. You are just as likely to be in the shower or the kitchen if you are to be attacked while you are at home. Now an anwer to your original question. You dont need to put your gun in a plastic bag because that will cause the moisture in the bag to condense and then you have rust on your weapon. Thats why police are trained not to use plastic bags for evidence. You dont want to leave it uncovered in the shower so that shower water will hit it for again you have rust. You dont want to leave it outside the shower uncovered for the steam made by the shower will be drawn to the cold steel of your gun bringing rust. What I suggest you do is what I do myself. Place a small table beside the shower just on the other side of the shower curtain. Lay your weapon on a small dry towel or rad on the table. Then just fold the towel over your weapon one time for easy retrieval. Steam condenses to water the same way dew does. If you notice anything outside that is remotely covered will not have dew on it because dew falls straight down. If you just cover the gun with a dry towel or cloth it will keep the weapon from getting water on it and your ready to go if you hear a bump in the night. Good luck and those of you who like picking on people, you need to find another place to hang out; like on the slippery edge of a cliff.

Chutethemall that picture made me almost spit water all over my computer and sidearm sitting next to it now that I think of it....where's my vacuum sealer I wonder if I have any bags for it..... :D

Glocks would be the best shower gun. The Tenifer treatment on the slide and barrel makes them practically rust proof and the few internals like the striker, trigger bar, and firing pin safety plunger are nickel plated. For an extra sense of security you could have the internals coated with gunkote, norrels molly resin, ect.

I like the fact that you can pull down the whole gun down including the firing pin and extractor in like two minutes. You could run a Q-tip down the firing pin channel and air the rest out with a blow dryer. Besides that you could swap out the only 2-3 springs every year or so cheap and simple. I don't know what you could do about the inside of the barrel besides swab it after every shower. I like and use the towel idea when i bring a gun into the shower and it tends to work though.

I have seen Glocks left at the bottom of hurricane Katrina flooding for 3 months and even one buried for 2 years than ran without oil and the same rusty springs threw 500 rounds easily on youtube.

Of the 3 glocks i have and 3 i have sold i never had the heart to put one of them threw full time bathroom duty. Wish i would have kept that $350 non rail g17. In the mean time i have a chrome plated Raven .25auto in the drawer under the sink. I know its not much but otherwise it would just sit at the back of my safe unnoticed and i wouldn't mind if it started to rust. The chrome like finish has held up pretty well. I might have to get a used Jeminez/Lorcin/Jennings sating nickeled .380 off someone for 100 to replace it. That way the first 2-3 shots will actually have an affect before it jambs :D

I wish i had my first pistol , a stainless S&W 4" .38 special. Would have made a good mariner also.I would be tempted to take the side plate off and smear the "gear box" with wheel bearing grease or cosmoline. You could refinish any pistol with one of those new spray on molly, epoxy, teflon, ceramic finishes for a finish that is impervious to moisture, I would just be worried about the internals.

It is a plausible scenario, therefore I would do it.

However I have read of people who brought a AR-15 and 2 mags in with them, that is....uh.....slightly paranoid, Unless you live in a bad area that is.

Has Psycho been playing on Turner Classic Movies?

How about a stainless steel .410 Snake Charmer shotgun with synthetic stock (ammo waterproofed for waterfowl hunting)?

Have you considered moving to a safer neighborhood?

Or instead of Soap on a Rope, Glock on a Rope?

Course the BG could sneak up while you have soap in your eyes and strangle you with the Rope.
