SHTF handgun

Yep..........

The one you have on your hip or in your hand is worth all the dream guns you ever thought of!!
A fellow jarhead once told me...."all you need is a pick up full of gas, one gun and a box of ammo.....by the end of the day you can have your truck full of guns an ammo fro all the people you shot!"
Now, I am not of that mind! SHTF is time to help out, not add to the challenges! But the Government model on my hip now, carried nightly on duty, 28 years young, lightly modified and reliable to a fault would be my choice for handgun. No doubt my trusty Officer's model would be on my person too as well as two uncle mike's quad mag pouches.
A reliable rifle on some sort would be within arms reach, though I may have to do a 'combat pick up' on that as I do not have one right now.
I have 200 rds of .45 acp and a spare parts kit in my Bug Out Bag(not including whats in the mags!), that should hold me for a while!
To each their own!

SHTF

If you mean the one that I would choose if I had to grab and run...I'd
pick the one that's easiest to maintain in the field. I know...nobody would
ever drop a gun in a mudhole...but just in case I do, I want to be able to
get it apart, clean it, and put it back together in the shortest possible time,
with the least chance of losing a part due to the fumble-finger syndrome.

That means that I've got over 30 to choose from right here. :D

My other grab and run guns would be one of my Ruger M-77 bolt rifles
in carbine length with aperture sights, and a hundred or so rounds of handloaded .308 ammo...More if I could arrange it, but it wouldn't matter. I don't plan on makin' a stand against the hooligan hordes. I plan on maintainin' a low profile. A good .22 rifle might be a better choice in the long run. You can't pot a squirrel with a .308 if you intend to have anything for the stew, and you can carry a whole brick of .22s for less bulk than 50 rounds of .308/7.62 nato. 'Course, that one gun, one box, one tankful idea is also viable. If things really get desparate, you could use the
.308 rifle to impose your will at a distance, and to the victors go the spoils,
it's said. Largely a matter of conscience and what you're willing to do.

Just MHO...Yours may vary.

The one that jumps immediately to mind is the CZ-75B. 15+1rds. of accurate, super reliable 9mm+P in a robust all steel package can be a mighty comforting thing. Marcus

I'll be predictable and say "Makarov"

If you're looking for a tough auto-loader, it's hard to beat the Mak...

Easy Choice for me

My choice would be my cz75bd. It is reliable, I can shoot it the best out of my little handgun collection. Another reason is that because it is all steel and rather heavy I can turn it into a nice club with a lil of the handyman's secret weapon and a stick if it ever did break.

A .22 autoloader for it's ability of easy suppression. It would compliment my .308 bolt gun.
The suppressed .22 could be used for the silent taking of small to medium-sized game.

make mine a .357 mag

I'd vote for an all-steel .357 mag, 4" barrel, 8 round cylinder.
Why? Simplicity, effectiveness of the .357 round, reliability, accuracy, versatility, widespread availability of both .357 and .38 ammo.

NOBODY does tough like Ruger. Any of their DA revolvers would be about a rugged as you could get. I would go for a Speed Six in SS with a 4" bbl with Hogue grips. Hey! I have that gun! :D

The half shoud GP-100 would be a great choice also. If you want adjustable sights, the Security Six or the regular GP-100 would be hard to beat as an ultimate no worries handgun.

Autos are harder because I don't theink any are as rugged as a Ruger Revolver. I would pick a gun that has a long history of being tough and doesn't have any plastic parts or cast parts. I think the BHP and 1911 are always a good standby but I would pick a Beretta 92FS just because of the reliability. If the gun jams, what is the point of it being tough? The Berettas seem to be much more reliable than the 1911s or BHPs.

If TSHTF, the first gun I would pick up would be a rifle, not a handgun. But if I could only take one handgun with me to supplement the rifle, it would be a Colt 1911 .45ACP.

Ahhh! Sounds like a brother from another mother.

Even though I just got it, this Ruger GP-100 is now head of the class. I shoot it very well, it carries its own magazine, and it shoots flatter than all of my 1911s at longer distances.

9mm Glock, no question about it.

1) You will be able to find ammo for it. 9mm is THE most prolific caliber.

2) It will go bang every time you pull the trigger, even if you just hid from the JBTs in the mud, or droped it in the fountian.

3) it can get you a RIFLE!

Either my Glock 34 or 17L.

Light-weight, accurate enough for long rang pistol shooting out to 100yds from prone or supported position. Materials and fininsh are corrosion resistant. Plenty of high cap mags on hand.

And most importantly of all.-

Both in 9mm. You know the favored caliber of the NWO/JBT/COMMIE/REPTOID/ISLAMIC RADICAL thugs that will be pillaging our nation after SHTF.:neener: :D

.357

S&W 686..... Flawless reliability, dead on accurate, and oftly intimidating to look at....

And if it runs out of ammo, it is heavy enough that you can swing it like a club....

I'd have to agree with Josey on the Ruger P-series. Mine have been reliable and easy to use. Alloy or Polymer frames with mag (and in some cases caliber) interchangeability.
