This is my modest SHTF setup:
.30 Carbine, A decent short/medium range round with decent stopping power. Also being a short, round-tipped bullet much like a .357, your much less likely to shoot your neighbor.... somebody in the room next to you might not be as happy though. Overall, 30 rounds of this will ruin almost anybody's day.
.22lr, Perfect for use against people you don't really want to kill. (looters etc..) Almost no over penetration worries. I have an old .45, but somehow the 10rnd clip (compared to 7 and 8), german engineering, and nifty little laser sight make the Walther my handgun of choice. Plus it just looks cool.
12 ga, Possibly the most useful of the three. The 12 ga has stopping power both mentally and physically. Many will argue that the sight of the shotgun alone will not deter a determined person however I think most ppl just looking to get a free lunch will look elsewhere. With the correct loads (birdshot), over penetration is not usually an issue, however many load their defense pump guns with buckshot and slugs. I currently have mine loaded with #4birdshot mainly because I'm too cheap to get anything more powerful.
If I had the money I'd probably have a better system, but for now it will do. I know lots of people come here and ask SHTF type questions, so maybe this will help you out a little bit.
What do you have? What do you prefer to use? Post pics of your defensive setups so we can have a little more drool material in our lives. Don't sweat it if you'd rather not give away your tactical advantage.
