I went over to the SB site, and found the following:
can we have firearms? assualt rifles or smgs?If no there is no ????ing way i´m going hand to hand with an or or a troll
I said that you can have whatever you can get together in 24hrs, so if you have access to ARs or SMGs, then you can have them. I think I would go out and see if i can buy an M14 or an AK47 and some ammo. How well would a .22 long round do against orc armor, anyways?
So, it seems, we can have anything that we can get our hands on. However, in the spirit of the weapons mentioned in the original post, let's stick with WW2 stuff.
We have an awful lot of crufflers on THR (including yours truly). Thus, armament wouldn't be too much of a problem.
The MBR would have to be the Garand, as it can put out an awful lot of firepower quickly and one need not be a firearms whiz to use it decently (for those from SB). Separate units would have to be set up armed with Enfields, Mausers and Mosin-Nagants (keeping the units together helps with ammo resupply and spare parts).
The sniper role would be taken by those with either K-31s or Finnish M39s, the latter of which helped the Finns to fight off hordes of Communist near-orcs in 1940 and 1941. I have to give preference to the M39s, only because finding a load of surplus Commie ammo would be easier than finding the Swiss GP-11 (and a lot cheaper, leaving more dough to buy either more ammo, or bunches of beater rifles at local pawnshops, etc.).
Machine guns: its gotta be Ma-Deuce, friends. Mount them jeeps to plug any holes in the lines. If anyone has any quad-50's, then that's the route to making Orcs extinct a lot quicker.
For shorter range arty, I have to go with the Katyusha rocket launchers (although availability here might be a problem. If we can transport ourselves to Lebanon and steal a bunch from Hamas, then we'd be in good shape). The noise on those suckers would scare even those giant elephant things $hiiteless.
Long range arty: 8-inch wheeled howitzers, loaded with an AP load.
AAA: Someone's got to go to those battleship museums and grab a bunch of those twin 20mm cannon. Best stuff out there in WW2 to fill the air with lead; nothing bigger needed against those big bird things, as they can't carry enough armor to warrant a bigger round.
OK, so what if we're talking about modern equipment?
MBR is the M1A - that's right, the semi-auto version of the M14. Its more controllable, easier for R. Lee Ermy and his kind to enforce fire discipline with, and much more available and affordable.
Main Sniper weapon: Loads of Savage 110s or Remington 700's in .308 (to have ammo compatibility with the MBRs).
Specialty Sniper weapon: The same .50 caliber weapon being used in a sniper role in the Afghan mountains.
Machine gun: Ma-Deuce. Some things can't be improved upon.
Arty: the MLRS, loaded on Bradleys that are chock full of 25mm shells for that wonderful chaingun they mount.
Air support: a) Rotary wing - ain't nothing better than the Apache Longbow
b) Fixed wing - AC130 Spectre/Puff the Magic Dragon and A-10 Thunderbolt/Warthog. Loads and loads and loads of 30mm ammo for Mr. GAU-8.
AAA - Sorry, we're going to have to strip the Navy of all of its Phalanx gun systems. Rockets may be nice, but I like the idea of having lots of lead in the air. Besides, depress the guns and they can be used to shoot the Orcs if there's a breakthrough - try that with a Stinger.
Needless to say, boatloads of ammo for all weapons involved. Troops go to the field with all that they can carry.
The 36 hours of prep time in Minas Tirith would be spent sighting in weapons, cleaning and lubing them, loading mags and digging into fixed positions. I'd try to have a few ditches filled up with gasoline, so that the attack could be channeled more effectively. We'd also need to work on communications, so that any gaps would be plugged real quickly.
Even if all we brought was standard infantry weapons, I think that there'd be an absolute slaughter of the Orcs. Sheesh, even the Romans from "Gladiator" knew how to throw up a crapload of firepower - they'd have done better than the LOTR jerks did - and we have roughly 1800 years of additional technological improvements to help us out.
