Fist of all.. I am a new member, but not a new reader. I would appreciate objective AND biased opinions, especially from current owners.

I am debating between the Sig Pro 2022 and the HK USP both in .40 S&W. With my experiences and impressions on handling both of these weapons aside, I'm looking for your feedback as if it were your choice.

Here are the weapons as I have it:

Sig Pro 2022
Trigger Pull DA/SA 10.0 lbs/4.5 lbs
Overall Length 7.40"
Overall Height 5.70"
Overall Width 1.40"
Barrel Length 3.9"
Sight Radius 5.70"
Sights SIGLITE Night Sights
Weight w/ Mag 30.2 oz
Mag Capacity .40S&W 12 Rounds

HK USP .40S&W
Overall length 7.64"
Overall height 5.35"
Overall width 1.26"
Barrel length 4.25"
Sight radius 6.22"
Sights 3 dot
Weight wo/ Mag 1.65 lb
Mag Capacity .4S&W 12 Rounds

There are certain advantages I see in the Sig. Night Sights, rail (although will probably go unused), caliper swappable.

I am torn. Both are similar in dimensions and price. I will be using this weapon for both range and carry. I have fired both and know how each feels in my hand. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I just got out an shot my new SigPro .40 and love it...Picked it up from buds with night sights cheaper with the transfer then ANYWHERE. Feels great in the hands, shoots great, good mag capacity etc. All in all very very happy with my purchase.

I really wanted to get a USP though...but the cost is what ultimately turned me off...I also really wanted a Sig as well...I figured for the price of the SigPro it couldn't be beat and I was right...So for under 500 I got my first sig and a great gun.

Just for S&G check the FNP's as well...Picked up the P-9m and OMG what a wonderful gun...

Other......I'd look into the Sig P229. It's production release was delayed in the early 1990s so that Sig could ensure that it could hold up in the long term to the .40S&W. It has been tested heavily by ICE, DHS, DOI, and the USCG which have adopted this pistol for agency use in great numbers. The competition for these contracts was Glock, H&K, S&W, and a few others.

Sig vs HK...

If we're stickin to the SIG vs HK... I'd definitely go with the Sig!!
Both are EXCELLENT in the quality department, however, I'm alittle confused by your statement... "I am torn. Both are similar in dimensions and price."
I do not own either, but have shot both and each have a little different feel but a VERY DIFFERENT PRICE!!
Don't know where you're lookin but NIB there's almost a $300 difference in these guns (at least from Bud's, Top Gun, etc)...
For the money, the SP-2022 is the no-brainer... great quality, great shoot and for UNDER $500!!

Mannnnn tough choice. I have a USP in 45, my brother has a Sig Pro in 9mm. Caliber difference aside, they are both awesome weapons. The USP has my vote, but either would be a good choice. The recoil reduction system in the USP soaks up the funky kick of the .40 quite nicely. The Sig Pro is nice too, though sometimes the slide wont go into battery unless you rack it firmly. This is apparently a known issue with these guns, and while it doesnt mean much unless you lightly rack the slide, I still dont like it. The USP feels a little more....dare I say, nicely made? The Sig is quite reliable, but the USP has a reliability record that is second to none. One thing to consider though, it is a little bit bigger. Not necessarily in the grip (because they are actually about the same) but in terms of barrel length and mass toward the front of the gun. If you look at the USP, get a used one, there is no sense in paying new prices for them. The Sig however, is like 485 shipped from Buds with 3 mags and night sights, and in my opinion thats an unbeatable deal.

Either way you cant go wrong.

"Don't know where you're lookin but NIB there's almost a $300 difference in these guns" I'm looking at a local gun shop. Both are about the same pice +/- $30 in the $500 range. And I would love to get the P229.. price is an issue with that one however.

Too High$$...

Then you're buyin in the wrong place!!!... I haven't done a real 'exhaustive price study' on this, but as I said "almost a $300 difference"... If you want to get a good handle on 'low'pricing' for a gun, always check with BUDs first!... Also, there are several reputable sources for 'net-selling' on the SIG-FORUM that will ALL sell you the SIG (NIB) for UNDER $500.

Buds... SIG-2022: $469 - HK USP.40: $711 = - $241

Top Gun... $459 - $789 = -$330

Gunbroker: $459 - $725 = $265

If your shop is selling you a NIB HK-USP.40 (not Used) for a $30 difference... I'd buy the HK... Cause he's given you a real good deal!!!

Shop around... unless you don't like buying from 'net-sellers'... or, if you want to patronize your local shop, which is OK but most times you're gonna pay more.

BTW: I own a P229 and paid about mid $700s NIB... Great gun, but 'relatively' expensive (but it's NOT a poly like the 2022). Also, you might want to check into the Sig CPOs... a P229 .40 @ Summit is $545.

Now, if you really want a great .40 at a good price (NIB $515) look at a CZ P-06... have a bunch of CZs and they're GREAT guns at a real reasonable price!!!

Good Luck.

Is the HK USP new at that price? If so, that is a very good deal.

The Sig is OK but was discontinued after a very short run. The one issue I've read with it is the takedown pin could bend...it is pretty long and thin.

The USP is a proven classic that should have slightly less recoil due to it's recoil reduction system. There are USP's out there with literally tens of thousands of rounds through them without a hiccup. It has passed every army and LEO test it has ever been put to. While the Sig 2022 may someday prove to be as tough it doesn't have that history yet.

The HK uses a unique HK rail which requires an adapter (which costs about $20 bucks.)

***Forgot to mention HK has option to be carried cocked and locked, like a 1911. This provides the same SA feel from the first shot to the last. The Sig has no safety and therefore must be carried decocked yielding a DA first shot followed by SA shots...or requiring the operator to manually cock before firing.

If you are looking to buy new, get the Sig Pro cause it's discontinued. You can always buy the USP later.

Sigpro discontinued???

The Sigpro 2009 and 2340 were discontinued, the 2022 is still in production both here and in Germany (domestic guns have German frames). The only difference between the P2009/2340 and the P2022 is the rail on the frame, everything else is the same, so in fact the gun has NOT been discontinued. According to reps from Sig, the Sigpro is NOT going to be discontinued.

BTW the gun has been in production since about 1998 for the .40 and 1999 for the 9mm, so the gun has not really had a short run.

I have had both guns and currently still have the Sig. For me it was the trigger that got me to get rid of the HK, that DA pull was terrible. That being said the gun was very accurate, the recoil reduction system really works and mags for the 40 USP are the most plentiful. If I was going to get another full sized HK USP it would be the 40.

SIG makes a lot of good guns but I dislike the SIG Pro. I dislike the HK USP a little less. I haven't really shot a plastic gun that I've liked, (and I've shot most of them, the FN and XD being the notable exceptions) except, believe it or not, the Taurus 24-7 which, although I had already decided not to like it, was a real pleasant surprise.
