So I bought an 1981 Sig P6 afew weeks ago. I have put a couple hundred rounds on 115gr ammo through it and it has fed every round. I think I am going to make this my home defence gun and I was wondering if any of you could recomend a good defence round for this gun. Thanks.

The Winchester HP's they sell at Wal-Mart aren't bad if you'd like to shoot enough so that you can make sure your gun likes them. They sell for $16 for a box of 50, instead of 20 or so.

Otherwise, most quality ammo will be fine. Features to look for include sealed primers and low-flash powders. I like Remington Golden Sabers, but Speer Gold-Dots and Cor-Bons are good choices as well.

By coincidence I tried some JHP's in two P6's (1979 and 1981) yesterday. Neither one would feed Winchester 115gr. (USA9HP).
What does feed in both is:
CCI Blazer 124gr. JHP (1046 fps, Kahr P9)
Magtech 115gr. JHP (9C) 1112 fps, SIG P6
Fiochhi 115gr. JHP (9AHP) 1607 fps SIG P6

Cor Bon DPX In Sig P6

I really like the Cor-Bon DPX in 9mm. At 1295 fps second using a Barnes solid copper bullet it really expands well. It's also very accurate.
This is one after passing through two layers of heavy winter shirts and a piece of old leather jacket. The bullet was found in the second water jug behind the test material.

It also retained 100% bullet weight.

Three P6 pistols in my family, a '79, an '80, and an '82. All have been 100% reliable with any 9mm ammo that we feed them. They are all extremely accurate as well. Probably one of the better (if not the best) handguns for the price out there.

Qualifying Day

Deputy25

Today was qualifying day for several agencies and the P6 didn't let me down. By the time it was over I had officers asking me all kinds of questions about the little Sig. Mainly how could a small pistol with a fairly short sight radius beat guys shooting full size Glocks as well as Glock 37's!
Easy, the Sig is one of the most accurate out of the box guns out there and always have been no matter what "P" series it is!
I was the only one out of a 30 officer group to shoot 100% with the P6! Hell of a pistol!!!! Mine is a 1979.

It's no surprise that a P6 runs rings around a Glock. If all things are equal, more or less, except for tolerances between metal in the fitting, you'll have tighter groups consistently. Also, consider the Glock as any other government-procured object: nine times out of ten, the contract goes to the lowest bidder.

That's for certain. I've never been a big Glock fan. I sometimes wonder if they were not so cheap for government agencies to buy if they would be so popular?
Don't get me wrong Glocks aren't bad guns but I've always had my doubts about the safety of the trigger mechanism. I've read way to many accounts of AD's with officers and no it wasn't the officers mishandling of the gun. Tha latest was a jacket toggle getting into the holster so when the deputy holstered the Glock the toggle caused the trigger to be pulled giving the officer a nice gash down his leg.
It's like comparing a Volkswagon to a Cadillac.
