Except for the oxygen consumed by the burning. Smokeless powder releases its own oxygen as it burns. Otherwise, the fire would go out in the case.

Isn't that oxygen just recombining with the other components of the powder and leaving the barrel at the same velocity as the rest of the combustion gasses?

Probably. Would the gaseous byproduct of the combustion have the same mass as the unburned released oxygen? I dunno. The difference wouldn't really be signifigant. Start with exactly 5 grains of powder...and end up with 4.99999999 grains of burned ejectiva.

That's why I said "nearly."

The topic is myths and mythbusters!

A myth or Not a Myth - that is the Question

  1. It's better to spend an inordinate amount of time time hashing out what the ultimate SHTF gun is, rather than learning basic first aid and CPR.
  2. SHTF threads are interesting
  3. Guns are a good financial investment
  4. Threads dealing with Walmart (yet again) are interesting
  5. THR is a forum for discussing movies and/or video games
  6. The moderators are a bunch of right-wing fascists
  7. The moderators are a bunch of left-wing commies
  8. I locked your off-topic thread because I'm just a big ol' meanie with residual childhood abandonment issues

1. Myth
2. Not a myth and the number of SHTF threads created and eagerly participated in prior to their ill conceived ban is proof of that.
3. Some are most aren't.
4. See 2. Replace SHTF with Walmart.
5. Myth
6. You said it... We didn't...
7. Doubtful but who knows.
8. Uhhhhhh... welll..... Maybe

MYTH: You can "see forever" with an expensive European scope -- and you will hit better when using one.

i can't believe i haven't seen this one yet"

The big, bad .50BMG can shoot an airliner out of the sky at 31,000 feet and can shoot a satellite out of orbit!

oh and:

unlike a plane wing which has a higher pressure underneath.

actually, the main lifting action on an airplane is the lower pressure created on the wing's upper surface, not higher pressure on the underside. wings are generally sucked up from the top, not pushed up from the bottom.

That's only half the explanation for lift. The Bernoulli theory/law. The other half is the Newtownian theory/law of "for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction". Since the wing has a positive angle of attack, the wing is pushed upward as a result of the relative wind impacting the underside of the wing and being directed downward. Same thing as when you put your arm out the window on the highway and "fly" your hand up and down. A hand is definitely not an airfoil so the main "lifting action" is a result of the wind hitting the underside of the hand and thereby directing it upward.

Now, waiting for a mod to tell us we're OT.
