Silly myths you have had to fight with

A variation I hear quite often from a lot of revolver advocates (RA's) is---"Wimin should use revolvers, because there's less to have to think about. They're simpler, by jingo!"

My wife forced our first handgun purchase because SHE wanted the nice simple revolver and didn't want to deal with autoloader controls in the middle of the night.

This is a myth. All rearward recoil is caused by high-pressure gas inside the cartridge case, pushing the case, the bolt and the whole gun rearwards. The bullet and escaping gas can't push the gun gun rearbards, because they are moving forward. In fact, they push the gun slightly forward, because of friction between them and the inside of the barrel.

Then why do blanks have recoil?

A gun shop clerk in Pensacola FL...

Some old crackerjack a-hole in Pensacola FL told me what type of .38spl rounds I was allowed to carry for armed security work by the state of Florida. This no load D-bag had no clue what he was talking about, :cuss:.
I explained to him that the FL Div of Licensing clearly states what type of loads you can use for .38spl revolvers; ONLY factory made HP rounds, NO handloads, NO reloads(allowed for qual/training use), NO fragmented or "exploding" loads(like Glasers or Magsafe), NO FMJ rounds, NO wadcutter ammo, only semi-wadcutter. I knew the state regulations and had the Div of Licensing issued handbook in my vehicle,.
Gun shop bozos like this guy tick me off. Rather than LEARN the state laws/regs they run off at mouth with FALSE information. Some of it may get an officer in serious trouble or cause more legal hassles later on, :banghead:.

I'll never forget how he said; "We don't cross that line." when I asked if they sold +P or +P+ .38spl loads.

The recoil most certainly does start before the bullet leaves the barrel. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. So, as soon as the bullet is propelled down the barrel, the recoil starts at the exact same instant. For the nay sayers, shoot a light and a heavy bullet at a target and you'll notice the heavy bullet will impact higher every time. This is because the heavier bullet will be traveling slower than the light bullet (and have more recoil due to more mass) so it will spend a longer time in the barrel before exiting as the muzzle rises which results in a higher POI.

It's more effective to have a bullet stop inside the target and deposit all it's energy, than to have a bullet pass all the way through the target and 'waste' energy.

not a myth... if the bullet exits out of the back of a target, then it still has energy that wasnt spent inside the target... if 2 similar weighted objects both impact at the same force, but one passes through the target and the other stops inside, the one that stops inside the target will expend more energy into the target...

- Exit wounds the size of a fist.
plexreticle: Seen it. Twice. My son's 280 Remington using Berger 7 mm 168 grain VLDs. Butchered both deer myself. Not only were the exit wounds in fact fist-sized, one of the deer had a fist-sized chunk of lung come out and fall on the ground. The bullets expand explosively inside the animal. Ever seen what a thin-jacketed, high velocity varmint round does to a ground hog?

Here are some myths I've heard:

(this one from a cop even) A .45 ACP round will go through an engine block.

Guns held for self-defense are more dangerous to their owners than to a criminal.

Gun restrictions are for reducing crime.

"Fifty caliber rifles-- hitting targets miles away" (from Henry Waxman's web site years ago)

A rifle that can't shoot consistently inside 1 MOA is "inaccurate".

Teaching kids to shoot is an irresponsible act.

There is a "gun show loophole".

There is an ideal caliber for x.

There is an ideal rifle for x.

There is an ideal pistol for x.

If you don't like the "ideal" (caliber, rifle, pistol) you are dumb.

My way of cleaning guns is the only right way.

AK sights are bad, but other open sights (of essentially identical design) are just fine and dandy.

Aperture sights (the alternative to open sights) are bad.

I have an "authentic" AK.

If (insert gun designer's name) had meant to have this feature or accessory on the gun, he'd have made it that way in the first place. Hence you are dumb if you want it.

(insert gun model) is a piece of junk because it was not expensive and there are millions of them.

(insert gun model) is wonderful because it cost a lot and I had to wait three years for it.

People who are afraid of guns are bad people. (give 'em a break once in a while so long as they're not lobbying for more restrictions)

Point Blank Range means super close (Hollywood-- we're never going to educate them).

A pistol grip stock (bayonet lug, flash supressor, et al) turns a rifle into an "assault weapon".

Assault weapons exist.

I'm for the Second Amendment-- I respect your right to hunt.

We're not coming after your guns, silly, paranoid-- we just want "reasonable restrictions".

That would be a great argument if energy deposit were the primary factor in incapacitation.

Imagine two similar projectiles hit the target (bad guy or deer, your choice) in a less-than-optimum location. The first bullet penetrates a short distance in a non-vital area, leaving an ugly wound but no immediately fatal injury. The second bullet penetrates all the way through the non-vital area, through something vital (heart, lungs, spinal cord, etc.), and out the other side. Which one is going to achieve the shooter's goal more effectively?

This isn't just hypothetical. The sometimes unfortunate results of using varmint bullets on large game, and frangible bullets on bad guys; are recorded fact.

The 45 ACP will knock a man on his butt.

On revolvers, when someone who I know will not maintain a gun or practice much with it asks me what to get, I always mention revolvers as a strong choice. They are simple. You don't have to keep up with mags unless you mess with reloaders. They stay clean easier on the shelf. They generally have a heavier trigger pull.

1. Only S&W, Ruger, Kimber and Glock produce quality handguns; everything else is junk.
2. The .357 Maximum will cut completely thru revolver top-straps and melt forcing cones.
3. The .300 Whisper is suitable for deer but the .30 TCU isn't.
4. The .357 Magnum, .45 Colt and .30-30 Winchester are not suitable for deer hunting.
5.The 10mm is equal to the .41 Magnum.
6. The .357 SIG is equal to the .357 Magnum.
7. Bottleneck cartridges can't be used in revolvers.
8. Gun writers know everything.

Whats not so authentic about it??

Unless you paid somewhere upwards of $15,000 for it plus the $200 NFA stamp, its unlikely you have an authentic AK-47, but rather a semi-auto copy. In other words, unless it has "da switch" and is full auto, its a re-worked copy (probably with a US-made receiver), not the real thing.

All the Hollywood myths.

When you point a gun at someone they always do what you tell them to.

Victims flying backwards through the air from the force of the bullet impact.

Shooting the gun out of the bad guys hand.

Cars blowing up when you shoot at them.

Cowboys making perfect 50 yard rifle shots from a galloping horse.

Private detectives who shoot from the hip with 2" revolvers and never miss, even at 20 yards, even while running.

All those perfect dramatic deaths. Say your last words, cough up a little blood, close your eyes and you're dead. No seizures, no wetting your pants, no taking a week to die of infection. And if you wake up after being knocked out, you're ready to go right away.

My favorite: If you just find the right caliber and the right bullet in the right gun, it will be a "Magic Off Switch" that will put down the bad guy every time.

"38 special is better than 38 super because its a ful on revolver round, its not cut down for an automatic like 32acp or 9mm"........and I thought 9mm was designed for auto loaders....huh dummy me

Sounds like they're referring to the fact that .38 super is semi-rimmed, whereas .38 is fully rimmed. That fact might make it easier for this or that revolver design to accommodate it. No question that .38 super is ballistically more powerful.

Point blank range is the distance between a firearm and a target of a given size such that the bullet in flight is expected to strike the target without adjusting the elevation of the firearm. See here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_blank_range . There are other sites that tell you how to calculate maximum point blank range.

Many hunters will sight in to 200 yards. This allows them to hit a deer between 50 and 300 yards without using any holding under or over.

It will if you're on the receiving end!

:scrutiny:

I had a guy tell me you don't even need to hit a guy with a .50 to kill him. Simply getting the bullet within 5 feet of him will cause him to die because of the shockwave.

That if you were to be trapped in a one way hallway when there are many werewolves coming at you that 40 rounds from an auto 9mm will saw through the floor allowing your escape. Thanks Underworld... you're prving to be idiots.

This myth was busted by Mythbusters.
