Similar to Kahr but higher capacity?

I should have thought of this earlier... my MiL is of average height and has hands on the medium to small size. She also has some arthritis in her hands and wrists. A year or two ago she decided she would like to have a handgun. My FiL did a lot of research and took her to a lot of stores to hold pistols. Eventually she settled on a Sig P250. I am pretty sure she got the compact version, and I know it's in 9mm. When she shot it she found the recoil to be easy to manage.

The Sig P250 is very modular. I think it came with different grips that could be switched out. You can buy different frames and magazines so that it can be full-sized, compact, or subcompact. You can buy other pieces to change calibers, including 9mm and 380. I think that in 9mm the magazine holds 12 in subcompact mode, and 15 or 17 in the larger ones.

It sounds like it would meet the OP's needs. I didn't realize until I read about it just now that you can change it to different calibers. Perhaps there is one somewhere that she could rent. I have shot it myself and it is a good-shooting pistol. :)

That is fascinating. I just did a quick search and read a long review. (I had to laugh at the reviewer's comment that the grip on most Sigs feels to him like a finely polished 2x4, except for the P250. I held a different Sig in a store on Wednesday and 2x4 was an apt description of that one.) Will definitely look for one to rent, thanks for the suggestion.

If you like the P250 but want a striker-fired gun, the P320 will fill the bill.

You might try a Taurus PT 111G2. 12 rounds and a short trigger reach for a double stack. Same can be said for the Hi-Power.

Wish the local ranges had Taurus in their rental selection. I've seen a couple of those that look interesting. Maybe they'll have the Hi-Power, although I thought I read that the standard grip might not be comfortable?

You might also try some of the taurus autos, like the millenium/ pt111. Smaller grip for a double stack and easy to reach the trigger and to rack the slide. It's the one my sister chose when she wanted one that was suited for small hands. It is compatible with one of the sig mags so you could have up to a 30 roind capacity.

Also I love the highpower, I think the grip is very comfortable and is much smaller than most double stacks, however it is a different animal being single action. Also the slide is one of the hardest to rack of any handgun I've tried.

I'd certainly advise that you to try the Taurus Millennium G2 PT111 if you can, I can tell you the trigger really isn't anything like the Kahr.

The Kahr has a smooth DAO trigger, the Millennium G2 when it is cocked or in "single action" trigger mode has a lot of take-up if you didn't know better you'd think the trigger was broken, at the end of all that travel it feels like you've hit a wall. And it is sproingy - like a Glock trigger.

In "Second Strike" trigger mode, the trigger is long, somewhat jerky and stacks considerably toward the end. Definitely not smooth.

I'm trying like crazy to get good follow through while dry firing the G2 but I can't - the front sight jerks to the left when the trigger breaks.

The gun is new to me so I'm probably not working the trigger optimally, but I'm just saying - its not as nice as a Kahr trigger.

What I learned on today's range trip:

  • I sure like shooting .380... I should work my way back up to 9mm, but probably not yet. Tried the SD9VE again and the recoil bothered my hand plus the trigger was somehow hurting my finger.
  • Didn't care for the HK they had for rental at the range (hard to explain it other than recoil)
  • My new CT380 looks lovely and I'm pretty accurate with it but it is a jam-o-matic. FTE/FTF every couple rounds. I might take one more stab at it Monday before I call Kahr and try to send it in. I seriously couldn't get more than 3 rounds out without a jam or... *click*. SO DISAPPOINTED and frustrated. I do like that Kahr trigger!
  • My husband insisted on renting a Glock 42 and I have to admit, it didn't hurt my hand like the other Glocks (the lower recoil is surely a factor). He thinks I should buy one. I'm not ruling it out.
