I just bought a M59 last night, and looking around online for removable mags, I noticed that all of them that I find state that they won't hold the bolt open after the last round. Is this normal for SKS removable mags?
Stick with the original magazine. None of the after-market mags I've seen were worth the money or time. Most don't feed well and the vast majority are a pain the fit. Yes, fit. They won't work out of the box without some file work.
Add 2, keep using the original mag. Stripper clips are cheaper, take up less space and easyer to use than the goofy aftermarket removables. Wants removable mags, get an AK.
Stick with the original mags. The bolt hold thing is handy, and the original 10-rounder is easy to empty in the case of, say, you load a stripper clip, and the RO calls a cease-fire; it's quite easy to just dump the rounds. Stripper clips are easy to use once you get the hang of it. If you want a hi-cap and/or detachable mag 7.62x39 rifle, get an AK, your SKS will be fun as is.
my sks came with an aftermarket 30 rd duckbill mag and it functions flawlessly, and DOES have a bolt hold open for when its empty (it is a plastic, almost 'fake round' looking deal attachted to the plate) however, i recently reinstalled the origional 10 rd fixed mag as i think it looks better, isnt nessecarry (as i have a GP WASR-10 now),and since mine came scoped, and due to the set-up of the range i shoot at (a table with a rest on it) it is easier to shoot with out the 30 rd mag getting in the way and hitting the table. just my 2 cents though...
You can always try the DC Engineering mags (rifletech.com, IIRC) and let us know how they all work out. I've been too cheap to be the first one to try em...
I concur with what has been said - I only had 1 detachable magazine that fed consistently. All of the others fail to feed or result in stovepipes left and right. It's just not worth it. I need to put a fixed one on mine when I have the chance...
