The gunstore guy who just took my AK with the 10 round magazines back just got an SKS. It is modified to take 30 round magazines. It has a regular stock, no pistol grip. It also has a bayonet and red dot scope. I think it is a bit much, and I think I like the AK platform better. Am I correct in my thinking?

Between the two, I'd prefer the AK.

Some folks report problems with using the 30 round mags in the SKSs. Just something to think about.

my two cents

My understanding of this configuration,SKS-30round mag,Bayonet.
The SKS was only issued 1 year with 30 round magazines,there are alot of after market conversions(illegal) out and about attrachting unknowing buyers.You read about alot of feeding problems with the after market conversions.
The Bayonet was issued in the later production years.My Yugo 59/63 has grenade launcher,Bayonet,10 round fixed mag,and flash supressor.All original issue,legal to own in Indiana.
Now in the republic of California the Bayo is a no-no,and I bet that detachable mag could land you some prison time. Correct me if I'm wrong but Cali is the only state I know of which is Bayonet less-friendly.

What do you guys mean "modified to use 30 round clips"?I've got a norinco that my brother-in-laws 30 rounder pops right in and I got it new.Illegal?I thought you could make a certain number of changes and still be legal.

my understanding is that the 30-round detachables are pretty unreliable

The SKS isn't designed for sustained rapid fire in any care - it's more "battle rifle" than "assault rifle" (insofar as those terms have any meaning)

I'd look for a stock Yugo - it should be cheaper and they are extremely reliable.

if the 30rd is the duck-bill type, the ones that i have seen/used suck. went back to to 10rd mag and stripper clips.
$129 will get you a nice SKS w/bayonet in my area. then add about $40 for the red-dot and scope mount.

Yugo = Yugoslavian

GLOCKT,

If it is a "modern" SKS (ie Norinco) imported after 1989, it cannot have a bayonet.

If it is a "C&R" SKS which has had an aftermarket 30-round magazine added, it has lost it's C&R status and the bayonet is no longer legal anywhere.
