I have found that the 123gr HP's are MUCH more accurate than 154gr soft points in my Yugo SKS. In fact, I got so much bullet drop with the 154gr soft points at 400 yards I found it extremely difficult to hit at that range with them.

I am guessing that the SKS is probably "made" to shoot 123gr bullets more accurately than 154gr.

Is it more accurate or does it drop less?... or both? Your post is a bit ambiguous.

I am asking...

However, from my experience, I seem to be having a harder time hitting at a distance with the 154gr stuff than 123gr.

Just seeing if I am the only one with this problem. My sense is that the sights on the SKS and possibly even the barrel twist was made for the lighter 123gr stuff.

I have only shot my tech sight equipped 20" norinco sks out to 300 yards a handful of times. I was using my favorite load 124gr wolf classic (camo box). I was just happy to see holes onthe target and wasn't really watching bullet drop. I aimed at the "head" of the target and got COM hits.

My experience with the 154gr SP ammunition is much more limited. I have used it as my deer cartridge out to 100yards.

I wouldn't know...I shoot both, but don't consider the SKS a 400 yd gun....At 100 yards, both are accurate enough to do the job extremely well.

400 yards is definitely at the end of the spectrum that the gun is capable of but I have seen some guys shoot very well with the SKS st some of our matches, from 200-400 yards.

SKS s and AKs are great for short range shooting. 200 meters will be the maximum knowing the ballistics are nt as good as a 5.56 . In fact less than a 100 meters is my norm to even think of pulling the trigger.

I don't shoot those distances with an SKS or AK in either weight class. The 154gr. bullets will most likely in my opinion be a little less accurate in terms of bullet drop than the lighter weight bullets. If I was hunting with an SKS using for ex. 154gr. SP bullets I would only be comfortable out to 250yds. at most.

The SKS, as a miliraty firearm, was designed (sights and barrel twist) for use with the 123 gr (or thereabouts) bullet. I can't see why anyone would think the sights and accuracy would be great with 154s.

Never said they would be great with 154gr.

I accidentally took my 154gr ammo with me to my last match. I don't even like Wolf but this was given to me and I accidentally took it instead of my 123gr stuff. I didn't think that it would have such a drastic effect on accuracy, although I did anticipate some difference.

Yes, it was.

There was never any military using standard issue 7.62x39 ammo loaded with 154 grain rifle & machinegun bullets in either the SKS or AK-47 that I know of.

I would think a greater issue then causing the accuray to suffer would be the beating the action would take with a gas system designed for the standard 123'ish bullet weight.
