I was just looking at the Winchester website today and noticed that the handgun ammunition prices have more than doubled in the last few months. Is this a mistake or what. They are asking for nearly $40 per box for 357 sig JHP, and $15 per box for 9mm ball???

Sad to say but with the cost of copper, lead, etc all prices have gone up. Hangun ammo hasn't jumped as nearly as bad as did rifle ammo. Even sabot shotguns went up in price. Here in Michigan winchester partion golds jumped almost $3.50 a box!

heavy metal

or light. . . it's in high demand. I suppose it will continue to rise and fall, but America is selling out her precious resources to overseas buyers in growing amounts. Increasing overseas demand for copper, brass, and other metals will translate into higher prices. There is going to be another hike this year I hear...it's also a great way to raise costs for national military /and/ civilian militias, if you like conspiracies :scrutiny: , both of which are heavily criticized by the Communist Party in China.

It will be interesting to see what the prices are at the upcoming gun shows

Had a show in the area recently and I picked up some 7.62x39 for what I thought was a decent price (didn't know as I'm new to SKS world). My buddy sees the price and says "oh man you got ripped". So we go walking around looking at the various vendors with that ammo and I thought my buddy was going to have a heart attack! Appears I got a decent price after all. Wish the budget had allowed me to buy more at the time.

It's almost to the point where I want to dig out the backstop at the range, melt down the lead, and cast my own.

One of the issues was supposedly a strike of copper miners, that issue has now been fixed.

I'm guessing that we're about topped out in price and they should start falling again going into next supper.

Hey, I've been doing that for a long time. There's so much lead in the pistol backstop, just wait 'til after a rain and it's just laying on the surface. Free lead, don't knock it, and it sorta reminds me of dew berry season without the threat of snakes.:D

Copper must be high. They have a big problem in Houston with thieves stealing wiring, copper tubing from AC systems, etc. One of the phone companies has a $3K reward out for capture of copper thieves, stealing it off the poles! I'm just waiting 'til they try to nab some of that 20K volt stuff on the big towers. ROFL Fried crook. Hell, the survivors will probably sue the electric company for liable and get rich in this screwed up society.

Redneck,

Do you reload using lead or jacketed bullets?

Even the cost of component will be going up, if they have not already.

Steve

I heard from Sportsman Warehouse that they are expecting another big price increase in early January on ammo. I'm thinking about buying NOW some of the stuff I shoot with regularity (357, 38, 40 S&W, 41 mag, 480, 22, 223).

I don't know what redneck is loading in his 40 but I am loading 165 gr JHP for about 12 cents a shell which is about $6 for a box of 50. What is killing me is the cost of the .22 55 gr. Nosler Ballistic tips form my AR, they now range from $31 to $39 for the 250 bulk pack

Between December of 05 and about March of 06 copper scrap prices nearly, if not more than, doubled. Brass went from practically worthless to half the price of copper.

Ammo prices ARE going up. So is everything else. If you shoot enough...start thinking about reloading. This will not actually be cheaper, just allow you to shoot more for the same amount ;) !!!! You can get into reloading VERY CHEAP. You can also spend a boatload or three getting set up. If you start reloading, you may want to buddy up with others. Buddying up may allow a greater savings. I am in the habit of stopping in sporting good stores that offer primers and gunpowder whenever I go past. Sadly, I have to travel 30-45 minutes to get to any, so if I am in the area for whatever reason, I stop. Shipping on those items will KILL YOU QUICKLY!!!!!!

Mr. T

I reload jacketed bullets, I may start reloading lead bullets for my target loads, that would drop the cost down to around $5 per 50.

1000 lead 180 grain bullets = $50 - MidwayUsa
1 lb Unique Powder = $15.95 - Sportsmans Warehouse
1000 Primers = $18 - local gun show

Grand total for 1000 rounds = $83.95 + $10 shipping on bullets = $93.95 or 9 cents a round.:D

Yeah, I've seen all my ammo prices go up from 22lr to 38/357 to 9mm to 45acp to 223 and 308. Alot of vendors are blaming the war, which kinda makes sense...It's still cheaper thna a drug habit  ;)

I could be wrong, but...

I used to scavage lead bullets out of range backstop, but some old timers told me that microscopic bits of sand and dirt in the lead will not separate out when melting for casting. So, you'll be firing "sandy" bullets through your bore which will not be good for the bore.

I stopped doing it on the outside chance they were right.

Comments???

Easy solution.....RELOAD! I reload 40 S&W for $5.50 per 50 rounds. Bottome line, its 11 cents a round.
i get ultramax 180gr cnl for .13cent a pop, i would prefer not to worry about the reloading. i still want to get into it though.

BIG AMMO

Try $40 to $50 a box of 20 on SW50cal. I don't tell the wife she'd shoot me..
