Moooose102:

There are a lot of folks here, such as myself, who have an assortment of pistols. Most of us are willing to meet other THR members and allow them to have a blast-fest with their pistols to see which they like most. I personally have met up with more people than I can count on 4 hands, just to let see try an assortment of pistols without having to drop $200.00 into rental fees. Just my .02c.

The Kel-Tec is a great pistol, but I would buy only the hard chromed verision...as I did. As you well know, summer CCW presents some difficult problems. Sweat, light clothing, and worst of all compelling us to carry a pistol that turns out either too small or under-powered. The additional complication that you are presenting is to locate a firearm in the $200 to $300 range that merits entrusting your life and your family's lives to.

Here is where I switch to frank-mode and assert the following opinion: go with a larger pistol, more powerful caliber and less concealment. I also wopuld hold off until you can hit the $500 and invest in a lifetime commitment. If you haven't conisdered the SA XDs in 9mm or the Glock 19, or Glock 26, you should do so. For me, the G26 is just a bit too small. I don't have bear paws for hands, but I'm not "petite" :neener: either. The samllest I can really grab-hold-of is the G19. Edit to add, Re: the Tel-Tec, when I hold it, I end up retaining the grip with literally 1 and 1/3 fingers. In effect, only one finger is truly retaining the beast. I say beast because it does present a significant snap during recoil. There is such a thing as too little pistol.

In terms of the diminuative pistols, I have owned Glocks, Springfield XDs, Kel-Tecs, Walthers, NAAs, Rugers, and the list goes on. It's hard to beat a Walther, Springfield XD or Glock 19. Of those, I would stick with 9mm, ergo bye-bye Walther. It leaves you with Glock 19 and Springfield XD sub-compact. Pick your poisen. They both can put the hurt on crime.

Be safe and make an informed decision. If you get into the Oakland county area, I'd be proud to meet up and let you try my collection and see what works for you. You buy the ammo, I provide the pistols for the day.

LCP

I had to put down a deposit on the 3rd of March and get on the waiting list for the Ruger LCP. Since the first of March, my local gun shop has received two LCPs and I'm next on the list. They are coming in at a rate of one a month. Availability may be better in your neck of the woods. So if your thinking LCP, consider signing up now.

Great for you, but I don't like 'em. Every handgun is a personal choice. That's why there are so many choices. I think it's futile to post "what should I buy" threads.

MCgunner:

So if that is how you feel about such threads, why even make a post in the thread?

Furthermore, you missed focus on the first and last paragraphs of my post, wherein I gave advisement that I am always willing to let other THR members test my pistols to see what works for them. I do this because it is much less expensive than renting all of the models I listed.

What was the situation again?

Moooose wants to buy small ccw.
Looking at kel-tec 380, ruger lcp, and kel-tec 9mm.
Wants to carry his final choice anywhere with any clothing.

He asked question: are there any d.a. or d.a./s.a. small pistols out there in the 250-300 dollar price range?

He later posted that he's leaning more twords the kel-tec p3at or the ruger lcp. He stated: i know there will be times when i want an ultra small pocket pistol.

Moooose, all I can say is I have never fired either one. They look like the same gun with different names to me. To me the p3at feels like a toy. The folks I have talked to, who have handled the LCp, say it looks and feels like a very well made version of the p3at. Good luck!

I just had my CZ82 to the range for the first time. It's built like a tank. I fired 120 rounds the first session which were a combination of WWB FMJ and Cor Bon JHP. There were no problems at all with how the gun handled. It is sound mechanically and is consistently accurate. The target was at 15 yards and all rounds went within 1 1/2" of where I was aiming. I even fired one magazine rapid fire with no problems and consistent accuracy, however I got a dirty look from the range owner.

I also rented a Bersa Thunder 380 for my wife to try. It was a piece of garbage. The hammer failed to fall the first three times I pulled the trigger. The slide would not stay back on an empty magazine. The slide release was so sensitive that it would release when I layed the gun down. It even fired once when I didn't have my finger on the trigger. At least it was pointed down range at the time. One magazine was enough. I took it back to the owner who promptly took it out of service.

i went out today and put my name on a list for a ruger lcp. i still don't know if it is the right choice. but i know it is the size i want. i dislike the lower power, but at least i will be able to have a gun wherever i go. and may people have told me that that is the number 1 rule. to have a gun. anyway, i know it will be better that a 22lr. when i can, i will still carry my 45. there is nothing quite like knowing you have enough gun to stop somebody. but a big gun isnt always practicle, at least for me. and, this way, i can have a back up gun also.

How small?

P3AT: Practice with cheap-o FMJs and carry Buffalo Bore ammo. 275 ft lbs is more than 38SPL. That will mess somebody up. There is no excuse to not take a P3AT with you. A pack of cigarettes makes more of a bump on my pocket. The new Ruger seems fine, too, but it doesn't have any track record yet.

Mooose,
I'll et you know when mine comes in and we can compare notes. I don't think we will be disappointed. :)

"Depending on where I'm going and how I'm dressed, I often carry a Smith 4006"...dude , wristtwister, thats an awfull heavy piece to be tout'in around, besides, i never understood why it will only take 11 rounds in a double stack magazine. so,i carry a BERSA THUNDER 380, Only because i live in the P.R.K. -(Peoples Republic of California) Otherwise, I would probably carry the Kel-Tec too! (B.T.W.) I have a 4006tsw in my nightstand. it works.

yes, i did look at the kahr cw9 it was bigger than i want. and i have been carrying a taurus 24/7 pro/45acp. its just that it is getting warm, and it will be difficult at best sometimes to carry a gun that size. i will miss having the punch of a 45, but a 380 is better than a stick! or my p22.
