I have 1K small primer 1X fired Federal 45 ACP I want to reload with 230 lead RN from Lee Mold for mostly near full house loads. I have CCI small primers and TiteGroup plus most other pistol powders to use. I do not want to crush or render brass to crematorium as recommended by most. This is a beautiful lot and want to hear from members who have some data. I also use a chronograph for load development.

It is a source of great irritation when one is missed and a large pistol primer is placed in a small primer pocket. Only because it means the ruination of an innocent primer.

I never saw the pictures, but a shooter at the range had received an email with pictures of a Dillion progressive, either 650 or 1000, that came apart when a small pistol primer 45 ACP brass appeared over a large pistol primer. The shooter said he could not believe the damage to the press. Evidentially it was ruined.

These are of primer explosion in a Hornady LNL. The owner was reloading 9mm, using Federal small pistol primers, and tried to force the primer into the pocket. Never take primers for granted!

I had one primer go off in my Lee auto prime. I barely touched the lever and boom. Scorched fingers and no other damage. Russian primers that I will never buy again.

Just load & shoot, repeat.

Sm primer isn't going to make much noticeable difference.

I agree. I have booth LP and SP .445 brass. Don't mind the SP just need to sort it out.

This is great news as I have a really nice box of Federal 1x shot brass some guy thought he was getting over on me along time ago by selling as LP and sending these instead. I did load a few to see what in the world all the crying was about but could not find any problem. As seen from the response it was due to inconvenience and possible danger aspects when dealing with primers. I sure appreciate this forum and spend many hours enjoying the content.

As stated one way or another already.

The only inconvenience is keeping them sorted out from normal LP primer brass.

If you can do that?

Just load & shoot, repeat.

It's a PITA to sort the small from the large, but I try to keep them separate. I'm sure I've got some with small pockets mixed in with my LP brass, just hope I catch them before I try inserting an LP on the press.

Easiest way to do that is store them separately. Use separate boxes for SP .45 brass and LP 45 brass. Likewise with loaded SP and LP 45. When at the range try to only shoot one or the other, that way your range pickups are the same.

Those 45 acp with small primers are extremely dangerous! There have been many, many reports of horrendous explosions occurring when the primer has been struck sharply and hard. The explosion caused a chunk of lead to go flying at speeds recorded in excess of 900 fps. Sadly, many completely unsuspecting sheets of paper have had holes punched completely through them and many a steel plate has lost paint! Guns have had to be disassembled to remove the resulting residue left from these explosions. I would strongly suggest you consider pm'ing me your home address so I can send you a prepaid flat rate box so you can free of charge to you, send me that brass so I can safely recycle with the couple of thousand I currently store, reload and shoot. I'm willing to sacrifice my money to save the center of another of your targets.

There is a good side to 45 acp spp cases. If lpp get in short supply(like SRP are now), you can use 357 etc spp.
I separate my lpp cases from spp cases when I'm reloading and the case won't take the primer. 99 times out of a 100 it is b/c of a spp case. The other time it is probably an AMERC!!!! HAHA

I agree that it is very annoying to have both, but I have a sneaky suspicion that large primer 45's, and maybe large pistol primers in general will start being phased out. I can't back that up, it's just an impression I get.

Oh for pete sake Wendellgj...Use common sense and load them small pockets with small pistol primers.

I ran a test a few years ago to see if there was a difference between large and small primers in .45 ACP brass. The small primers ran about 25 fps slower then the large primers on average.
