I was looking into the smith and wesson M@P series handguns seeing that they were just made avaiable to buy in the Liberal Republic of Massachusetts. just wondering if they are worth purchasing and yes I know they are like glocks so please no glock posts, we here in MA can't purchase new Glocks otherwise I would. Just wondering what everyone thought of them, I'm looking into the 9 or 40 cal for self defense/ target practice, 45 ammo is so expensive now otherwise I'd consider it but 45 out
Thanks

I like my MP40.
I read that, and wondered why an MP40 has anything to do with the OP, but then it dawned on me.....

I personally like the idea of the M&P in 9mm; it just seems "right," and 9mm can be decent personal defense rounds and is cheap (at least around here) for target practice--much cheaper than .40.

I have an M&P 9c. Great gun. I agree that the M&Ps are improved so much with trigger work that it's not worth keeping them in factory form.

I have a M&P as my main CCW , I used info from Burwell to remove the mag safety . I've tried Glocks but the ergonomics weren't for me . Carries well , accesories are getting plentiful , so early models had some small issues which S&W has cleared up quickly .

I would check out the M&P Compact. Because you're limited to 10 rounds, the full size doesn't add you much value other than a longer sight radius.

You can buy one from the factory without an internal lock and without a magazine drop safety.

I'm just curious, but does Mass. specifically list the "Glock 9" as a prohibited model? If would be funny if they banned a gun that doesn't exist becuase of rap lyrics and movies.

"I gonna bust a cap with my Glock 9..."

I have a M&P40 for a little more than a year now and have put a little more than 1200 rounds through it. Aside from a few failures to feed at the end of a magazine in the first 200 rounds the gun has performed without a hitch. It feeds everything I've fed it including my wimpy lead 180 grain reloads that are much more fun to shoot than factory ammo. Putting some grease on the hump on the trigger bar improves trigger pull. The only advantage Glock has over the M&P is a shorter and more defined reset.

I love my MP 40
My first handgun bought it in April and now has over 1300 rounds through it.
Never had a problem:)

I had a full size in .40 and a compact in 9mm. Both were great guns while I had them. The GLOCK system fits me better all around so I stayed GLOCK. Two of my co-workers bought my two S&W M&P's and both are quite happy with them and use them as dailly CCW weapons.

The Grip adapters for the S&W seem to be the best out there in my experience. As good as they were the GLOCK line simply met my needs better.

If issued one for work I would be quite happy with it, either caliber.

Remember in Massachusetts all DAO pistols must be sold with 10lb triggers. That means in Mass, the M&P has a heavier trigger than models sold in other states. Another downside is no High capacity magazines for your M&P. But, at least the trigger can be easily corrected.

The previous Attorney General used his power to basically ban the sale of new Glocks in the state, even though they passed the state mandatory safety testing, and are on the approved for sale list. He was a major elitist jerk. Unfortunately for us, the new AG has not reversed the decision, and probably never will. Pre 1998 Glocks are legal for sale.

wow I knew the situation in Mass. was dire w/no new glocks but a required 10 lbs trigger
yikes

That's interesting about the laws in Mass. - but I love my M&P .40 - has a nice balance, good control, easy to strip and clean - I haven't had any trigger work done but I haven't had any issues with it - can't really go wrong with it.

Lusting for an M&P .45 - fired one at Smith and Wesson - fell in lust off the bat. Yes, Massachusetts is an odd place. Smith and Wesson is right up the road from me and there's many guns in their inventory that I cannot or could not buy....

Not to be a commericial but if I can save you a few bucks, I will.

If you decide on the M&P, BudsGunShop.com has the 9mm and .40 (full and compact) for $399 + $25 shipping + your dealer's transfer fee.

You also qualify for 2 free magazines available via mail-in rebate from S&W (see their web site) and a free range bag via mail in rebate from S&W (not sure of the URL, but someone posted it in another thread).

You have to buy before 7/15 for the mags and before 7/31 for the bag.

I ordered a full-size 9mm last week but haven't probably won't receive it until next week. The waiting is the hardest part.
