Smith and Wesson model 586

Do you guys like them, I'm just looking for some info on it a buddy of mine is looking at a 4" blued one at a local shop it's 535 dollars. Is this a fare deal? It also hasn't been shot much from what I can tell.

Some will undoubtedly chime in and tell you you're overpaying. And it's true that many of us, including myself, have bought them in the past for less than that. But I see fewer and fewer of these, and the 4-inch version is a classic. In my opinion, a pre-lock 586 that is in good shape (and has the hammer-mounted firing pin) is worth every penny of $535.

Buckeye is exactly right. We have the usual around here where folks say they can get everything for less and less. You'll probably get a post or two that says they can get your 586 for $200. BS. But as Buckeye says, without the lock becomes an desireable option. And if you like it, get it and enjoy it.

I carried one for years on and off duty in the early 80's. I had it hard chromed and the front sight insert in yellow plastic (I worked mostly nites). I trusted that revolver w/my life. The weight and ballance of the 4" , was perfect for me. I still have it and my sons want it. I think that anyone that has one, loves it. The 586 is a little heaver than other revolvers. but handles recoil a little better. you would be hard pressed to find a better revolver.

$535 would be an excellent deal in my area, assuming it is solid mechanically and the finish is in decent shape. All the ones I've seen in the last couple of years were priced in the $600 range.

If the condition is good and the price isn't over budget, I'd snag it. For the longest time I was not a fan of the full-underlug look, and even wrote so on the boards. After picking up my 4" 586 a couple of months back, I've changed my mind. Still not a huge fan of the look, but I have to admit it is far more comfortable to shoot Magnums with than my 4" M-19. Here's the picture I used in "New Stocks Arrived" now that it is wearing some proper wood stocks.

agree, $535 is decent price these days, for one in really nice condition
I have bought some older really nice S&Ws for quite a lot less, like a lot of folks
but that was 'then', not now
tougher and tougher these last couple of years to find the really good stuff for <$600

I don't keep up on prices, so cannot comment on that, but I do love my 1985 model 586 (no dash). I hope I am never in a position where I have to part with it. If you can afford it, I would not hesitate to get it.

Well very good Ill tell him that. He's been going back and forth with the idea he wants a gp 100 or that, he thought the 6 inch ruger that the LGS was selling was a bit forward heavy and he was leaning towards the 586 so ill make sure to pass that along thank you guys again with the helpful info as always

I like the 4" full lug 586/686 compared to the 6" ones for the same reason your friend felt about the 6" GP-100, they feel a bit muzzle heavy to suit me. The 4" 586/686 is well balanced and a joy to shoot. $535 is a fair price for a like new 586 no lock revolver.

I have a 4" 586 no dash. I paid more than that about 1 1/2 years ago, but it was nearly new in the box. It is a spectacular revolver. I can't see myself without it, ever. A beautiful quality gun.

Make him an offer, if it doesn't work, buy it anyway. Like has been said, they ain't around anymore. I missed an excellent 10-4 HB a couple of months ago, trying to save $50 bucks. You'll be glad you got it.

The 586 or 686 are excellent 357s. I have 2 early models that I would not part with. If this is a prelock 586 in good condition, I would not hesitate in buying it.

Hello friends and neighbors // Mine have had the firing pin bushing replaced by S&W due to a recall years ago.

Other than that the S&W 586 has been great and is my favorite revlover. Especially the 6" as a "do all" handgun.

I prefer the slimmer Hogue grips for my K & L frame Smiths but optaining the factory grips with the 586 would be a plus.

I agree with the folks saying $500+ has become the new norm for good condition, 4" 586 with a little holster wear. I don't mind finish wear on my shooters as long as they are solid. A solid but very finished challenged, 1983 with a slight top strap cut brought, over $425 at the LGS recently.

Definately one of the best .357s available IMHO.

I'd jump on it if I had the funds, a nice 4" 586 is rare in my area, I picked up a 6" no dash and love it!! Even my wife likes to shoot it, with 38's.
