I've been looking around for CC guns and most people point to the 3913 by S&W. My friend who carries every day loves the 5903 and swears by it. What do you guys recommend? Also is Gunbroker.com a good place to buy one and what price range would be fair? Thanks fellas.

The 5906 is pretty heavy for CC and I carry full size guns. If you can do it than go for it.

The 3rd-generation S&W pistols are superb guns, and the 3913 and 5906 are prime examples of this no-longer-produced line. For concealed carry, the 3913 is a great choice. Its light weight and slim profile make it a natural for this role. I carried one myself from time to time until I discovered the Kahr K9, which I prefer only slightly over the 3913.

The 5906 is also a great pistol, but as someone has already said, it is very heavy. At 38 ounces unloaded, it's about the weight of a full-size 1911. I have a 5906, too, but I wouldn't choose it as an everyday carry weapon. For the car or a nightstand, though, it's a good choice. So you know, your friend's 5903 is different from the 5906 in that it has a lighter alloy frame. In this configuration (in addition to S&W's "value line" 915 and 910 models), the 5903 makes a more suitable carry gun than the 5906, based purely on the fact that it weighs 9 or 10 ounces less.

Gunbroker can be a good place to shop, but I suggest that you look in local shops as well. The 5906 is more prolific, so you would have a greater chance of finding one locally. Depending on condition, expect to pay about $300-$350 for a 5906. The 5903 is harder to find, but its price should not be very different. The 3913 seems to have taken on cult status with the concealed carry crowd, so prices have gone up in recent years. Good ones now go for $400-$500, and the "value line" 908 is pretty close to that amount. Still, considering the quality of these guns, the price still reflects money well spent in my opinion.

Why did century import a S&W? I thought they were made in the USA. @ColtPythonElite - Damn that's a good deal man!

Ya I didn't see that it weighted 38oz my EDC is 36oz and that is fine for me but it does weight a lot for most.

Don't waste your time with these big heavy high capacity pistols for CCW, most end up in a closet or gun safe.

The way to go is polymer in something like the ruger 9mm LC9 for $350 , SW body guard 380 $349 or a small sub compact glock 9mm or 40 sw.

My 3913NL is more comfortable for me when carried IBW than my Glock 19 and 26. From my experience with the three that I have had since the early 90's, I believe the 3rd generation S&Ws to be top quality pistols.

Also look for a used CS9.

CS9 is the ultra compact version of the 3913. I came across mine at a random gun show.... Absolutely love mine and it's often my carry peice.

I owned a 6906 in the late 1990's when they were really cheap on the PD trade in/surplus market and honestly I never liked it. The double stack grip was wide, square and felt like holding a brick. The gun was also very heavy fully loaded for it's size.

I've shot a number of friends 3913's and althou it's identical size wise (to the 6906), it's a totally different gun. The single stack 3913 is lighter, thinner and easier to hold/shoot for me.

If you're dead set on choosing between a 5906 and a 3913, I'd go with the 3913 for the reasons stated above.

I used to own a 3913 -- it was an accurate and comfortable shooter. My personal opinion is that it couldn't decide what it wanted to be; what I mean by that is that it's the same size length/height-wise as a 6906 but only held 8+1, while as a single-stack it wasn't quite as concealable as some of the other subcompacts. I decided to sell it and use the funds towards a Kahr PM9 (which is one of my two main carry weapons these days). I also have a 6906 that (as someone else noted) mainly stays in the safe, but does get carried now and again.

Despite my comments above, I'm a big fan of 3rd-gen S&W pistols because of their history, reliability and aesthetics. I just opted to only own one in my collection, and decided to keep the 6906 instead of the 3913.

Well I think I'm pretty set on the 3913 now. Thanks for the input fellas. How will I know if it's a third gen pistol? Also what about the tactical version too? What's the difference between the two?

How will I know if it's a third gen pistol?

Models 3913 (SS version) and 3914 (Blued version) were only produced as 3rd gen pistols. Second gen single stack 9mm pistols (e.g Model 439) were ~3/4" inch larger in OAL and height.

Smithy 5906 or 3913

I have many 59s and love them to death, but I would not recommend them for CC. Really too heavy @ ~ 43oz fully loaded (15+1). Open carry or nightstand, definitely. Keep in mind that a 3913 fully loaded is between 28oz to 30oz - still pretty heavy for a CCW.

I have a 908S which is the economy version of the 3913/3914. I like that it's fairly slim since its a single stack. I've gone through 1,000 rounds with a single malfunction.

The strange thing is you cannot perform tactical reloads by design. If you have a round chambered, the next round in the magazine that will enter the chamber is moved slightly forward out of the magazine which prevents the magazine from dropping. I thought there was something wrong with the gun but took it to my gunsmith who showed me why it does that.

I don't think you'll go wrong with the 3913. I love mine. The factory grips are very slim, if you want a bit more meat, go with the Hogue rubber. I refinished some Hogue wood and made hex head screws for it. My favorites for looks but even a bit thicker than the rubber. Pick the 3rd gen that suits your needs. Not a bad choice amongst them.

The 3rd generation S&W psitols are all stainless, built like the proverbial tanks, and extremely relianble. The downside is that they are heavy compared to the S&W99's or S&W M&P's. However, if the weight and size are not a problem they are excellent pistols. Personally I opted for a Kahr PM-9 - 7 rounds of 9mm in a very slim package.

I went to apply for my CCW today but it apparently was the wrong day. I'm going to tomorrow now to finish it. I'm 99% sure of the 3913 and I think the weight might feel good to me. The prices are in the high $300s on Gunbroker.com which might be my best bet right now. Now I need to figure out where to carry it (especially in this damn heat wave). Where do you guys like to conceal it and whats a good holster for doing so? Thanks.

I would go with the 5900 series. The grip on them isn't especially large. I went through the police academy with a 3900 series, and while accurate, I was always stuffing magazines while the instructor had everyone else's undivided attention. The magazines for the 3900 series aren't all that easy to find. The only thing you save is a little weight.

@wnycollector - those are perfect! I was looking for a leather one like the ones shown on the site. How does it feel on the inside on the pants?

With IWB, buy your pants a little bigger and get a GOOD belt (I have a Simply Rugged "real man" belt) and it is a very comfortable way to carry a good holster. My winter CCW is a 4" S&W M13 .357 in a concealco holster;)
