Smoke rings?

Maybe I've just never payed attention, but today when I was sighting in my 1874 Sharps Business Rifle for deer season, I couldn't help but notice that each of my 45-70 rounds was making a gorgeous and perfect smoke ring that increased in diameter as it went downrange before dissipating entirely. I was shooting in the local sheriff's department training range, each with a gravel revetment, so there were no crosswinds. I run 70gr Goex Cartridge behind a 500gr Marcel spitzer lubed with beeswax and lard, so the smoke is great plenty for such neat effects.

Anybody else ever notice this when sitting behind the trigger? Now I'll have to watch again...

I've seen this effect when watching others shoot BP rifles on a quiet day with still air. I never had it happen when I was doing the shooting, though.

I've seen smoke rings that follow the discharge of black powder cannons and seen a few myself from my small arms. They are a neat sight to behold.

Given still air and the right load, any gun creates rings, and not just smoke.

We had a very cold still morning last year for a cowboy shoot and the BP shooters were getting smoke rings with ery shot, They were so excited they were all but humping my laig! Looked good though. Mick

I shot a bull elk from about 20 yds years ago, perfectly smoke ringed his head before he tipped over.

Smoke rings

At the shooting range I have seen this effect with my Armi Sport reproduction 1858 Two-Band Enfield rifle.

I usually use a load of about 55 to 60 grains of FFG with a lubed .58 caliber lead bullet.

It is a cool effect...
