I've been looking at getting a S&W 442 for a few months now, and while I can't yet afford one, I sure like thinking about it, and what I'm going to do with it when I get it, what gear I want, etc etc.

Of late I've been thinking about how J-frames and other snubnose .38's are usually relegated to the pocket, ankle, or an IWB holster. Of course, this is only logical. J-frames are backup guns, not duty weapons.

But I can't help but wonder, does anybody carry a J-frame or similar-sized revolver OWB, in a fancy rig? It doesn't have to be a full-blown BBQ rig, but I'd love to see pictures if you've got 'em.

I always liked this one for J Frame OWB. I don't own one though.

When I put on a suit, I often carry a 1966 Colt Cobra with a silver Tyler T-grip in a nice leather pancake. The whole package is a pretty classy looking set up, IMO.

The holsters is far from a budget buster. It is an American Pride Leather brand. They are only about 30 bucks.

It's neither fancy, or a J, but what the heck; the 2 1/4" SPNY Ruger is definitely close enough in size...

Not "fancy" . . . but a really well made holster. Secure . . . the gun "clicks" in . . . and it carries well on the belt too. Not cheap, and worth what you pay.

Mitch Rosen UPL model (Upper Limit) . . .

To wear it . . . is to understand!

I bought a couple very well made custom holsters for my pre-agreement J frame when I first started to carry it. On a whim, I plunked down $24.95 for a plastic Fobus paddle holster one day while trying to find something that excited me in a gun shop. The little J frame rides in the cheap plastic holster now, and the fancy holsters are keeping closet space from going to waste. I always looked down my nose at plastic stuff, but it holds the gun securely, is quick and easy to put on and take off, (it goes over my belt, not through it,) and I don't worry about scratching it if I bump into things. The only maintenance it requires is retightening the screws once or twice a year and wiping it down with a damp paper towel when it gets dusty.

All that said™, if it's a dress occasion, I leave the J frame home and carry an engraved Python in a well made leather holster.

sidheshooter: Do tell more about those intriguing speed loader pouches. Are they for belt or pocket carry? Who makes them? How do you like them?

I actually carry my Smith 642 in an OWB all the time. It has a Crimson Trace grip which extends the grip some and makes it a bit more difficult to pocket carry.

The OWB holster that I use for it is a Galco leather Concealable Belt Holster that is molded and holds the gun high and tight to the body.

I have found the 642 to be a nice gun to carry in an OWB holster because it is so light you hardly notice it's there. With Plus P ammo, however, it still packs a punch and the laser grip helps with accuracy. So I almost never pocket carry it anymore.

Those are the slimline loaders from Andrews custom: http://www.andrewsleather.com/traditional.htm

Look under the mag pouch link on their site. (also, check out the exotic leather links, just for kicks...)

The loaders straddle the belt (definitely aids concealment) and the wrap-around pouch holds them in place on your belt. the release feels just like a thumb break holster.

At least as fast as any other SL pouch, and comfortable enough. I'd recommend them.
