lol @ hundreds of thousands of rounds.

i wish.

22 short...........50 rds
38spl........bout 30 rds
357mag.....bout 50 rds
9mm.........bout 50 rds
.410.........bout 20 rds
16g...............250 rds
12g...............350 rds
7.62x39........1500 rds
.223.............1800 rds
30-06............400 rds
45acp..........1000 rds

the .223, 30-06, and 45acp are all handloads.

most of the 223 is 55gfmjbt with some 55g vmax and some nosler hpbt custom competition.

most of the 30-06 is military m2 ball with a few win 147gr fmjbt and a few 168gr hpbt.

most of the 45acp is 230 hard cast round nose and a few hardcast 225g flat point.

# of firearms and calibers influences stockpile... I own three firearms...

I keep about:

1000 of 7.62x39
250 of 7.62x54R
1000 of 9X19

I'm always on the lookout for deals though b/c I love taking my friends shooting. Sportsman's guide's a great place to get some cheap ammo if you use the coupon's right.

I'm getting a 12g soon. So I'll need slugs and shot for that. I can use rifled slugs in a smooth barrel on a shotty right???

Happy stockpiling boys.

-I didn't realize how much ammo's out there.
COOL.

Storing Rimfire

Thanks for the great input. I have learned a lot.

Some of you have alluded to special care needed to store rimfire ammo. Educate me on what is needed and why rimfire is more dangerous than other types of ammo ?

PS I was just interested in what is a reasonable amount of ammo for the average Joe like me to keep for target shooting during these times of shortages. I certainly don't want anyone to divulge any info that would get them in trouble. Just chewing the fat.

150 - .45 colt
100 - 9mm
50 - 12 ga
2500 - .22 lr

I've got enough components to keep me going for 5 years and will continue to add to that.

1000 for each small caliber, 500 for large calibers, and limit your calibers. Any more than that and you will not be able to transport it all in your vehicle. Keep in mind that ammunition is a tradeable commodity, so even if you don't NEED 1000, I'm sure someone will need some and it might earn you something else you need. If you buy too much and have to leave it behind, you've just armed the looters.

I googled this up for the heck of it and a little perspective on how little room a lot of ammo takes. They ordered this to take to a machine gun shoot.

23 cans each containing 400 rounds of .308. That's 9200 rounds.

exactly, thats not even 10,000 rounds....

NOW this is what i dont understand. why in the f*ck would anyone need 100,000 rounds per gun?......if its in ammo cans, your looking at pallets of ammunition, thats just stupid.

what i want to see is a picture of those 100,000 rounds of ammo per gun. that would fill a whole garage

No one said that they "need" or even that they "want" 100000 rounds per gun. But, that would be "enough". You might consider switching to decaf.

"that would fill a whole garage"

One car or two car? :)

And what if it did? It's not unlike having money in the bank, clothes in the closet and food in the pantry. I don't buy toilet paper one roll at a time, I get the BIG package...just like ammo. It cuts down on trips to the store and it doesn't go bad.

nothing personal, so please dont take it the wrong way, but some of you are just silly. 100,000 rounds + of ammo per gun?
Let's say that I shoot 10K worth of 9mm per year (200 rounds per week), and that I'm in my mid forties.

If I wanted to cut my practice in half and have enough stock on hand to get me thru retirement, I'd need 200K rounds of 9mm in storage.

Why does that seem unreasonable to anyone that actually shoots?

Have our experiences with the ammo cost/availability variances that we've seen over the last five years taught us nothing?

i have a set amount put up in case ammo prices go thru the roof and i cant afford to buy as much and i try to keep what i feel i will shoot in a 3 to 4 month period on hand, but i will say on 22lr i dont walk out of a store that sells it without buying a brick, but we have 11 22's

No, actually it doesn't. I've seen that much at once before. And like rbernie said, folks are finally learning.

For years I was single, and had a decent amount of "burn" money. I bought ammo and reloading supplies. Bought a house, and discretionary money was cut severely. Then I got married and between the two of us, we had a decent discresionary fund. Seven months ago? Divorce. WHAT discretionary money?!

Guess what? Because I was prepared, I'm shooting as much as I ever have, even though I'm basically broke as a church mouse. In fact, gas to the range and back is currently cheaper than a movie ticket, so I'm shooting even more...... and I'm not hindered by current market conditions.

Same thing goes with clothing, food stuffs and basic medical suplies. It's called being prepared.

I had a find today in the local fleamarket. They had in a corner one grey box of 20mm storage case made of strong metal and featuring two handles on either end plus 4 clip over top locks for the top lid. It was grey in color all around with a silver interior.

That thing will hold three times my current ammuntion supply without issue.

Price? 20 dollars out the door.

I found a smaller 50 cal chest ball box with a handle and it's badly aged but will hold handgun ammuntion quite well. That one sold for 12 dollars. I think a little disinfecting will be in order. Seems to be from the Vietnam or Early 80's era. But the markings are badly faded.

So today was a good day.

There isn't enough..........but

10,000 rounds set-aside is a minimum I can live with.

I shoot everything else I can get my hands on.

I keep a minumum of 5000rds each of .22LR, 9mm.

I keep a minimum of 1000rds each of .223, 7.62x39, .45ACP, .30Carbine, .41Magnum, .308WIN, .357Magnum, .38SPL, .380ACP, .32ACP.

I keep a minimum of 500rds each of 30-30WIN, .303British, .22Magnum, 12ga, 20ga. (Shotgun ammo a mix from slugs to No. 8 shot)

And for some reason, I have a few boxes of .22Short and .22Long.

As long as I stay over these minimums by 250-500rds, I'm not compelled to start threads about not being able to find ammo.

The simple answer is you can't have enough.

With looming economic collapse--bans--taxes or a possible civil war.

You can't have enough.

Civil War isnt gonna happen.

But Civil Insurrection has happened. Google Baltimore in 1968 after the King Murder and see what they did to that city on both sides.

You mean--you hope a civil war doesn't happen---never say never.

I'm hoping one doesn't happen either---but planning for the worst.

Well Texas recently asserted the 10th Amendment and States Rights to Uncle Sam. However many other states keep trying to do the same thing I dont know. But a super majority of 34 states telling the US Government to back off should be enough to stop a civil war.

50 men given 100 rounds each makes 5000 rounds gone in...what? 10 minutes> Half an hour?
