So I bought this Security Six...

The gun shop really must like you to give you the gun for $200. It would have been an astounding price at $250, and it sounds like they undervalued the gun to begin with. (Here in Maryland, the paperwork alone prohibits such deals. Even .38 Rossis are well over $200!)

I don't know what's not to like about Pachmayrs, but there are a lot of other options. I have some rubber Hogues, but I can't figure out how to install them (there's a clip that attaches to the frame and it's a pain...besides, I like the wood grips and Pachmayrs better).

Don't ever get rid of that gun or you'll regret it.

How accurately does your snubby Security-Six shoot?

I've only had one range session with that one so far. I just bought it a few weeks ago. With my 158 Horn. LSWC handloads using H110, shooting SA from a squatting rest arms on the bench I was getting great 1" groups at 10 yards. Same with the 200 grain cast performances and some factory 158's. I don't shoot the light bullets much if at all, so I don't know how it does with those. Next trip I'll take it out to 25 yards for a more detailed test.

This one doesn't seem to have been used much probably because the ejector rod had unscrewed and wedged itself in place. The double action pull is typical of new Rugers--very stiff. But it's already starting to loosen up with dry firing into the fireplace. I don't think I'll need an aftermarket spring.

Cosmoline:

How accurately does your snubby Security-Six shoot? The reson I'm asking this is because I have an identical stainless 2-3/4" Security-Six that I bought about 10 years ago-but, it's still NIB so, eventually I'll(hopefully)be obtaining one, that will be a shooter?
Slick,

I can tell you for a fact the Snub Six's, Security, Service, and Speed, shoot as good as any revolver. Slow fire, cocked, yes expect sub 1 inch groups at 10 yards, and if you are a steady shot, head shots at 25 yards are quite do'able.

Just last weekend, using my 4 inch Service Six .38, wth 158gr SWC handloads, I used the tea-drinking one handed stance and put them in just one ragged hole at 10 yards.

I'll try that with my 2 3/4 inch Speed Six this weekend just to see if it can do it (and I bet it does.)

There was an article, I think it was in an NRA mag, that quoted Bill Ruger as saying he "never made a dime" on the Security Six. I guess it cost a lot to produce but they never thought they could raise the price at the time. I have a four incher and absolutely love it. Paid $150 about 10 years ago. But that was NY, where legal guns can cost a lot of money.

Dry-firing at the fireplace? I prefer the television, especially during Westerns!

After my one and only ND a few years back, I have a little rule about that sort of thing! I only dry fire at something that's got several feet of brick and concrete around it.

I don't like to dry fire at the tv just because the background moves. I can't really judge how much movement in my sights there is when the shot breaks.

I still do it sometimes though just because its fun;)

I am a better shot with my 2-3/4" Security Six than with most of my other handguns. Mine is very accurate with several of the lower price 158 grain commercial loads and in particular likes Blazer JHPs.

Thanks! My Security-Six is of 1983 vintage, which is the first year for the second design heavy barrel. This barrel design was more tapered than the first heavy barrel that was introduced in 1978-79 and was also heavier. I found this revolver NIB but, I haven't fired it yet.

What is the "trigger pull" pound wise for the Security Six? My SS6 (6 in barrel, 1979) is hefty but doesn't seem as stout as my S&W 19-2, which is 9lbs-2 or 4 oz. Just curious.

Kyle.

Yeah, it goes against all conventional wisdom, but I'm the same way. I can hit clays out at 100 yards with my 2-3/4-inch and it always surprises people. Give me a 6-inch and it becomes much more difficult. The front sight is always waving around more, and it takes me a little longer to settle it down. I think with the smaller barrel that I can relax more.
