Why are these so expensive? (compared to like the USPc .40 i own from new)

I know i like the looks of the weapon (and it doesn't help that i'm biased and love HK's...) but i still wonder why they are so much more expensive than the USP full/compact/2000 etc.... is it just rareness? and if so... why rare... not like the p7 could have been on the AFB... rofl

Someone let someone who will someday save enough to buy one know why =) (it doesn't help that most of my purchases depend on whats avail gun/money wise when my compulsion to buy one arrives...)

hehe

Strange operating system.
Different tooling to build.
Good Steel.
Import tariffs.
Relatively rare and now out of production.
That red HK on the side.
The fact they feel like they are built out of a solid piece of steel.
The fact they shoot like some 2K semi customs.

Are they worth it? Probably not.
Do I love my two? HELL YES.

Wait until you buy an 8 round magazine for $50.00. :neener: Now multiply that magazine by 10.

worth is subjective

If they weren't "worth it" then they would not sell for the prices they do.

I have owned a total of five, currently just one, an M13, my favorite.

Tharg, depending where in Texas you are, you might find someone willing to let you try theirs (I am north of DFW if it helps). PM me if you like.

P7

Best gun to get your wives. Sqeeze grip and shoot. No safety lever to remember and no Glock type trigger safety. My wife could never remember to press the safety lever down and can never remember to keep her bugger hook out of the bang switch, so the P7 was a god send for her. Also, very accurate and fun for me to borrow. Built like a small tank. SOLID.

The P7 is one of the finest 9MM's ever made. A great carry piece, although a little heavy for the size and capacity. Sadly, the world has passed it by with new materials and lighter, slimmer designs. Still its a great gun and you can find them used in excellent condition for less than a USP or P2000. I paid $800 for my P7M8 and $650 for my P7PSP.

I carried one for awhile. I shot more accurately with it than any other gun. But my G19 carries so many more rounds (especially when I slide in a G18 mag  )

My P7 was my favorite gun, but I had to sell it during a fit of poverty/unemployment. I plan to replace it very soon. They're well worth the price, IMO.

From the time I first saw one I wanted one. Just because it was different. Had pretty much written owning one off and forgotten about it. I bought a USP and then began thinking about one again. It took me almost 10 yrs but I got one, a P7M8 a couple yrs ago. Well worth the wait!:) Easily one of the nicest pistols I've ever handled. Second only to the P9S. I've sence wanted another in the series. Luckily, this past weekend I was able to put a P7 on lay-awy at a local shop. Will pay off and bring it home next weekend. This will be HK #5.
Will I buy another? a P7M13? a P7M10? If a good enough deal shows itself, maybe but I'm happy with two for now.
A had always wanted the M10 model as it's the "ugly duckling" of the sqeeze cockers but with thier going rates, I'll pass.

Oh, about them being discontinued... ;)

As to thier cost...

It's an entirely different assembly process.
Very unique operating system.
monetary exchange rate.
supply and demand

Kinda like asking why a European engineered sports car auto costs so much. You get what you pay for. Those happy with thier $200 pistols, fine be happy with them but don't belittle a fine firearm simply because it's costly. Some just can appreciate finely engineered and designed firearms.

Funny thing about the P7. I wanted the P7 for two reasons only.

1)Because it completed my P5,P6,P7 collection.
2)The undeniable cool factor.

What I found was that it is a marvelous pistol in every right. Uber accurate, spectacular trigger, ingenious, innovative and wonderful safety system, very natural manual of arms, incredible functioning just weird enough to possibly save your butt should somebody take it away from you, thin and comfortable. Basically I found a wonderful civillian CCW piece and frequently carry mine. The P7 surprised me as it was much more then what I expected.

Chris

How does the firearm fit in large hands? I have never held one (I can never find one around) but I wonder if it would be big hand friendly.

I'm not sure what makes it so expensive or if it should be, but I will say this...I have owned many guns in my collection, and my P7M13 is my pride and joy. I absolutely love it.

Had I the money, an M8 and/or M13 would be high on the list. I had a PSP for a while and had to sell it because I was poor. Not a fan of the Euro style mag release, but everything else about the gun was fantastic. Hopefully I'll stumble onto a deal at some point, but prices have been steadily going up over the past few years :(

The best example of the P7, in my opinion, is the P7M8, followed closely by the P7 PSP. Both retain the flat nature of the design, and both are chambered for the proven 9mm cartridge. The P7M10 and P7M13 share the same frame, which has a much wider (and longer) grip. The P7M10's slide has an incredible amount of mass.

Here is one of my P7M8s, in hard-chromed durability and beauty, first with its factory grips, then with Nill Rhomlas checkered grips:

At this point, I consider myself an HK P7 collector, and own at least two examples of each production P7. For the P7M8 and P7M13, I own more, four and three, respectively.

Here is an example of the rarest of the production P7s, a blued P7M10:

Only 1,000 or so were made, in the early 1990s. I found mine almost a year, still NIB, for a mere $1299.99 at a local gun store. They had no idea what they had, and priced this puppy as though it were the most common of the P7s, the P7M8. By contrast, 3,000 or so factory-nickel P7M10s were made. I had the nickel on mine stripped, then had it hard-chromed. Here she is, first with factory grips, then with Nills:

Sadly, i must say that i've wanted one of these since the day the I watched the now crack addict in the "Bodyguard".:banghead:

Now, in the last month we've purchased two of them, and am now pissed for depriving myself for soooo long.

I guess to make up for it, I will have to buy more of them.

Steve

Yeah, post number 300.:D :D

P7M8: Get one while you can

If you think P7's are expensive now, wait a year. They just keep going up in price. I'm glad I got mine when they were merely hideously expensive.:what:
Also, get some extra magazines - if you can find any. Those will be worth their weight in gold down the road.

Actually, I didn't mind paying $1100 American for my used (98%) P7M8 with night sights, but the $50 A for the magazines knocks the wind out of me.

IMO, you can't get a better 9mm auto. As much as he dislikes the 9mm,:cuss: even Jeff Cooper likes the P7M8.

There are several P7M8's for sale right now at www.gunsamerica.com if you are interested.

Ken, you're killing us with the photos of your P7 collection!

Also, get some extra magazines - if you can find any. Buy only magazines made by Heckler & Koch - there are other generic magazines for the P7M8, but they are junk and do not function reliably.

my standard carry piece for 20 years. P7. Works every time, accurate, very little muzzle jump, easy intuitive manual of arms. Love it.

I'll toss in a little P7 "hate" to balance things out. I don't actually hate the pistol, but after owning four P7M8's and one PSP, I realized it wasn't the pistol for me. I just couldn't shoot it as well as my CZ 75 or my Makarov. It pointed low for me, which made it hard for me to find the front sight quickly, and while it was very accurate inside about 7 yards, I couldn't hit squat with it past about 10 yards. I think the tension required to hold the squeeze cocker down interfered with my normal grip.

The final straw was when we realized my wife needed both hands to reliably fire the P7. She could sometimes manage it strong hand only, but never could get it to cock with her weak hand only. She liked the accuracy and how it fit her hand, but if she couldn't shoot it one-handed, it was useless as a defensive pistol.

For me, the P7 "itch" was very thoroughly scratched. I have no regrets selling the pistols I owned and no desire to own another. That'll leave more for you guys who like them.

I will say, that if they work for you, there is nothing better. But, they just don't work for everyone.

Sigh.... that colection makes me salivate....

and i know i want one... and i gave up on "cheap" guns long ago... every one i ever bought malfunctioned or was wonky in some way... and i don't keep guns like that... they get sold, traded, given away, etc... I don't ever have "poor" moments... i have too hard a time selling anything (especially for less than i paid for it... and especially especially if i don't really wanna sell it) (oh and when i say i don't have poor moments... i mean poor enough that i could bring myself to sell one of my guns! rofl, not that i'm so independently wealthy that i don't feel EXTREMELY poor at times :) ;))

My USPc .40 is my baby... i'd not trade it for the world... i just recently bought a p99 (well semi-recently) from someone on line here... its nice... and it shoots well, could be one of my favorites... but i so want to get one of these P7's... hehe i'll have to save i guess... that or have a moment of stupidity and pay for it by how poor i have to live till i "catch up" again :what: :what: heheh

Thanks for answering tho! I guess w/ different machining etc.. it would be more expensive... just didn't understand how a "made in germany" USPc would be 1/2 the cost... =( I knew my USP was a LOT more expensive than others... but i'd read too much (that ended up proving true about my baby) that it was the gun i wanted. :D Limited production/out of production of course will push a gun price up as well.

once again... thanks!!!!

J/Tharg!
