I went to Wal-Mart today to pick up some .22 LR ammo for target practice. I get the common question, is it for a rifle or pistol. I say pistol since I'm going to use it in a Ruger Mark II, and he says, "Well, it might not work, since it is labeled long rifle." He then proceeds to open the box with a box cutter and shows me one of the rounds. I'm like, "I'm sure it will work fine" and pay an leave. His name tag notes he's been an employee for 4 years! Is this stuff really this hard? That's one of the first things I learned when I grew up.

Just because he's been there for 4 years doesn't mean he knows anything about guns.

Keep your eyes open for the Wal Mart employees in the Green vests, as those are the ones trained for Sporting Goods.

Often I've gone in there and one of the Blue Vests is behind the counter ... most don't know much (but then again I don't expect them to).

Sounds like he was trying to be helpful at least.

Reminds of the time I went to Kmart to pick up some 120 film for my Mamiya 645 that I had forgotten. The clerk told me "there was no such film". GREAT........................ I just spent $1000.00 on a camera that no-one makes film for. Just remember, that yesterday, that guy at Wallyworld, could have been been clearing carts from the lot.

Well, just remember, he someone's son.

Thank GOD he's not mine. :D

They are trained though to ask if the ammo is for a handgun or rifle, if you say handgun it becomes a pain in the a$$. I always say rifle just to watch them try to figure out if it can be.

Employee at the store near me said that the only had 9mm ammo for a Luger pistol.

...and he says, "Well, it might not work, since it is labled long rifle."

To tell you the truth, I'm sorry tosay that I think I would have laughed or guffawed right in front of him. Not to ridicule him, but just the funny line he just blurted out. Not everyone is a gun nut.

From now on just remember that you will have to try and find some .22 long pistol for your MK 2!

When they ask if it for a handgun or rifle, always tell them it is for a rifle. Either that or "none of your damm business". Better yet, just say it is not for shooting but for collecting. I wonder if they have a spot for that on their little check list.

Reminds me of a story I once heard.

A guy went to a restraunt, and the waiter was, lets say, not too bright. He's getting things wrong all night. Wrong order, wrong check ... you get the idea. At some point, the patron says to the waiter, "What the heck is wrong with you? Why do you keep srewing up? Don't you do this all the time? The waiter just looked back at the guy and said, "if I were you, I wouldn't have a job like this." In other words, the waiter was recognizing that he was not good at his job, but also recognized that better jobs were not in his horizon.

This was a true story related to me by someone that was accompanying the complaining patron.

My take: in situations like these, we just need to be patient, and appreciate the gifts that God has given us, and recognize that everyone is not wired the same. Sure it is difficult at the moment, when you encounter an incident of ignorance or incompetence, but not everybody is going to be able to have the same capabilities. That is what make our country so great - its recognition of everyone's inherent rights under God.

Sorry for being so flowery. Everybody gets frustrated once in a while.

I do have to second at least he was trying to help. Although it doesn't seem Mondo was bashing.

You know, of all the times I have picked up ammo from Wal-Mart, they still have not asked me what it is for...

Neither have I, though I have noticed the clerk skipping the questions on the machine.

My assumptino has always been that if you look over 21, they just skip the question.

so does anyone else mess with the clerk and when asked for rifle or handgun respond submachinegun? it is worth it for the look on their face.

Think of WalMart as a big discount warehouse with music. It'll improve your experience.

You went to a *Mart store for 120 film? I don't think I've seen 120 in anything other than a photography shop.

Last time I did that the guy behind the counter grinned and responded with "you're going to need a lot more then 3 boxes then"... I had to let him down by telling him I was just kidding.

He said if he could afford it he'd love to have some "class III goodies" :D

I guess we just have a better class of Walmart employee around here.

What can I say it was on the way and I needed it! I took a shot.
The part that I liked was that she didn't say "we don't have it", it was "they don't make it". And despite my telling her they do make it she insisted what I need was 126!
Oh well, I dont mean to put her down, but don't pretend you're an expert when you're not.

I tend not to complain about stores that charge me pennies over cost for things.

When they ask me if it is for a handgun or rifle I generally say,"Neither" and act really nonchalant. Now that is a look that is Priceless.

I've often thought of getting a part time job at Walmart in the sporting goods section, just so there would be someone with a clue.I think they have you working all over the store though,so as I don't want to be the "clean up on isle 12 guy" I guess that's out of the question.
The Walmart near me has a couple clueless guys too.....I went to get some 45's..I say I need a 45 value pack, you know the one with 100 rounds. He looks and sees the 40..he says"it says 40 s&w.....will they work?"I say"no, they'll fall out of the barrell."He looks at me like I have 2 heads......I say"the 45's are to your right."He of course looks left...I say"no,you other right."He finally sees them, and says"how are these different than the .40's?"I say..."they cost about $2 more......":D
The other kid who works there sees me so much, the other day he says"You should have a +%$& load of frequent flyer miles on your credit card just from buying ammo here."
