now, i know that it's not the best idea to fire surplus 5.56mmNATO rounds in a rifle chambered in .223 remington, but you can fire .223s out of a 5.56 rifle all day long...

does the same apply for 7.62mmNATO and .308 win? im getting a bolt action btw, if'n that makes a difference...

ight cool, i plan on using factory .308s for hunting (probably federal cause it's a few bucks cheaper) but i also plan on shooting it alot, so now that i know i can, i'll just get some surplus 7.62 NATO when i feel like just going to the range for a day...

The Military 7.62x51 is slightly different as the 5.56 is to the .223 only the other direction. The commercial .308 round and chamber are rated for higher pressure than the Military 7.62x51. Sooooo, using mil-surp in a standard .308 would be good to go.

The problem with shooting surplus ammunition is that you never know what ammo from where or what quality will be available. If any. This seems not to matter to people shooting surplus ammo in surplus rifles but I would not buy a new sporting rifle with visions of plinking with surplus ammunition.

probably a browning A-Bolt, or a Ruger 77 Hawkeye...

I have both an A-Bolt (Medallion):

and an X-Bolt (Medallion):

They are both outstanding rifles, highly recommend either one, you can't go wrong.
