So, we won for now, but what are we going to do when officials come for re-election?

That's why 1/3 of Senators come up for re-election every two years and all Congressmen come up for re-election every two years.

Vote.

Don't plan on it. They will never have more support for this than they had in the first week of January. And now it's to the point that even if there is another trigger event like Newtown, it won't even matter if it is a BIGGER event if nothing new happens.

They pushed it now, because Feinstein et al knew it is their last chance. They had hoped that they would get a shot when they controlled the White House and both houses in 2009, but it turned out the White House wasn't interested. (They didn't want it this time either, they know it's a losing issue that eats political capital. They only pushed it because they were caught in the headlights with a bad event, a lame duck session of congress, and no excuse for why they had ignored Di-Fei for so long.) The old guard is about done. Feinstein, McCarthy, and Lautenberg are all old. Biden was their other big partner, and all he can do now is break a tie in the senate, and only until 2016. They're done. These were the people who were bringing an AWB to the floor every session since it lapsed in 2004. When they're gone.....who will do it?

This was it. This was the best shot they were going to get, and it fell way short. They are going to have to completely re-tool and start over again. (Which, make no mistake, they will indeed do.)

Toomey and Manchin need to go IMO. I think Senators like Tester and Johnson (SD) who voted for gun control consistently yesterday and live in rural states should be replaced with Senators who better reflect the views of their constituents.

McCain is another guy who should have been retired a long time ago. I would like to see him primaried or replaced with a pro-2A Democrat.

The timing of this legislation is not a mistake. It was close after an election so that if it failed they were hoping we would forget before the next one. All the while whipping up antis about losing! We have to bring this home on 2014 or its going to get bad real quick.:uhoh:
Be informed and Vote!

I was listening to rush at lunch, and what he said makes a lot of sense.

Why was Obama so mad? He knew it couldn't pass the house anyway. He was mad because, it was supposed to pass the senate, fail in the HOUSE, so that it could be a battle cry and leverage to try to retake the house in 2014. We pulled a reversal on him and took his lolipop away, THAT's why he's mad.

I don't much see how the house will get changed significantly. They are doing exactly what they were sent them to do, no matter how mad HE is at them, their constituents are getting the results they want. Matheson, Utah's lone Democrat, got more NRA money than any other D. They know where their bread is buttered, this event didn't change anything, it reinforced it.

Yeah we won, one small skirmish in a big war but every little bit counts.
Oboma is mad but I don't care because I like it when he looses and finds it hard to live with. I will vote pro gun again as I have in the past.

You want have to wait till the next election. They are regrouping at the bottom of the hill right now, round two isn't far off at all. There to stupid to realize defeat and strengthen their army before the next attack......I hope.

They pushed it now, because Feinstein et al knew it is their last chance.
There will always be a next time, always.

Some of them need to go. Replace them with a more pro gun candidate of one kind or the other. If not pro, not so anti. Sometimes we have to take baby steps, but we must take steps. We have a long long way to go.

But what I'm emphasizing is, for over 20 years now, gun control has been driven by a handful of lawmakers who don't know when to quit. Feinstein, McCarthy, Biden, and Lautenberg mostly. They are the ones who bring up gun legislation at every new session of congress. They are the ones who were mad when Obama didn't bring it up in 2009, and cornered him on it this time. Di-Fei is 79, Lautenberg is 89, McCarthy is 69, and Biden is mostly out of play. They knew that the circumstances were not ideal for this. They would have preferred to hold both houses when the crisis came around. But they knew that even THAT wasn't a guarantee of anything. If they waited for the next time they hold both houses and the White House, there is an appropriate crisis, and public sentiment is up in the air, it won't happen until they are all dead. This was it. They had to try. When they are gone, who will be the flag-bearers? Who will be the next generation? This was their absolute best shot, and it wasn't even close to good enough.

Of course they will try again. But they have to completely re-tool and start over again from scratch. The next generation is not yet apparent.

Not much electionwise I CAN do until our two worthless senators from Illinois come up. Then I'll work my butt off to try and defeat them.

I heard Lautenberg is not running again after this term. So he will be out of the picture pretty soon. I hope the newer generation of Democrats and Republicans see the poison that gun control is and do their best to stay away from it after this. Bad results for them in 2014 will really help our cause. The memories of 1994 were burned into these career politicians minds and they were squirming when their party was pressuring them to vote for it.

Don't forget that the political party to which they belong has additional gun control measures embedded into the party plank/goals statement. There will ALWAYS be somebody willing to volunteer to carry the banner for additional gun control so long as their political party will reward them for it.

We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms. We can focus on effective enforcement of existing laws, especially strengthening our background check system, and we can work together to enact commonsense improvements—like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole—so that guns do not fall into the hands of those irresponsible, law-breaking few.

The only real way for the RKBA community to stop playing defense is to get the Democratic party to turn it's back on the notion that additional gun control is a good idea.

We need to self regulate so the government or the people don't feel like they need to step in.
Sell guns to responsible people, MN we have a permit to purchase so it makes it easy to be sure they are legally able to buy a gun.
Take someone out to the range and spread knowledge and dissipate fear.

One very important item is STATE elections! Anti-gun State laws can be just as restrictive and any Federal law. :uhoh:

The vote was too damn close for me to think it was a victory. These power-grabbing bandits will come at us again and again. They will never quit trying to whip people up emotionally and take our freedom.
This is not about hunting, it is about protecting ourselves against criminals and politicians. It is not about sporting or anything except our right to defend ourselves. Just think about how many governments have killed after disarming them.

^^^This. Good luck, though. Hell, even Bill Clinton told them that this platform was a bad idea to champion, and nobody listened. So far as any memory of 1994 being etched into their minds, that won't work unless it's 1994 all over again next election cycle. As exhibit A, I would humbly point out that my state's Cantwell got jettisoned back in the 1994 revolution, yet here she is again with her yea votes.

The best chance of changing the dem plat is another 1994. That would start to make D vs. R more inconsequential than it is now, when it comes to 2A. Otherwise it's same thing, different year at some point in the near future.

If they can't close the deal with Newton as a driver, they can't do it, period (won't shut them up or stop them from trying, however).

Stopping this in the Senate deprives Obama&Company of the ammunition they wanted to make this a real issue in the 2014 House race, but accomplishes the NRA's goal of getting every member of the Senate to take a position too firmly staked to weasel out of. If the vast majority of the American people TRULY supported gun control, this wouldn't be a problem for O&Co. Clearly, they DON'T really, and I think that is the #1 thing that really sticks in Barry's craw...

Of course, most Senators apparently know this is not the case, which is why O&Co failed THIS time, and why their threats of turning FAILURE into a springboard to success are weak. What they did FAILED, and they're going to stick with a failed strategy, hoping it will eventually work.

What we did SUCCEEDED. That's actually a pretty good reason to keep doing it, IMO.

Vote, write letters to your Congresscritters and local papers, give as you're able wherever you think most effective. It's a proven strategy.

Don't forget to reward the good behavior too. Begich has my full support. Other issues--ALL other issues--are secondary.

Reward them how? Are you implying that we send them money? Here is my problem with that this is supposed to be a selfless job to represent the people. Why should I send them more of my money, that they already taken damn near 50% of, to help pay to fight a right that I am supposed to be guaranteed. They are all crooks IMO and they need to go. This system is really broken. if I have to pay for something, its not a right, if I have to fight for it constantly then its not much of a right either. Rights are supposed to be just that, guaranteed. There should not be a constant battle over them and that is where people need to wake up. Every generation in my family has fought for that right and damn it if it sure as hell doesn't seem like they have already been taken.

I'm not going I drop my guard until at least January of 2014. If the seats in the Senate remain pretty much unchanged, and the GOP maintains the majority in the House, we are probably free and clear until 2016. Once DiFi, and her ilk either retire or die off, the constituents of their districts will elect a clone to push the same agenda.

The battle against gun control will be like the war on drugs or the war on terror. It will never be over, neither side will ever win and there will be a lot of unnecessary casualties.
