So let's say you were flying somewhere over the Pacific, and your plane crashed and being the sole survivor who is washed up on a small island, you find a cave.

Now I know you are going to say Heidi Klum, but nope.. that's not what you find.

You find a cave with a near endless supply of ammo, and 1 gun (handgun, rifle, your choice) in the cave. Now God is good and so the ammo and the gun actually match...

Question: What gun would that be? In what caliber?

For me, after thinking long and hard, I'd have to go with the M14 in 308.

How the heck should we know what gun is in the cave? It's your cave! I didn't plant a gun in it.

But, if you're asking what gun we would hope to see in the cave, Boats has already given the only logical answer followed by TBO's which is a very good answer as well.

Depends on how likely rescue was. Was it a commercial flight? How far away from the crash is the island? Was it a private plane with a rescue kit that already had a flare gun and plenty of flares? If commercial, signalling would be much more important than water or food since the appropriate authorities would be looking for survivors shortly after the crash.

-Water gun if the ammo is fresh water
-Any firearm if there's the option of tracer ammo...
(...with a bayonet, if the flight was commercial, since no knives are allowed on planes these days... FIRE MINETA... sorry, now back to our regularly scheduled programming...)

I'd probably have to go with a water gun and fresh water ammo if nothing else is specified. There's no point in asking about gun preferences if quick rescue is expected.

If it's a small plane, hopefully you have the emergency kit with flares and other assorted goodies. If it's a commercial flight, your keychain magnesium bar (if you can manage to scrape it with something) would do for starting a signalling/cooking fire.

I'd want to find one of Gerald Bull's super guns. When I started firing shells into orbit one of the space agencies would notice and send someone to check it out.

If it were a small Pacific island...

It'd probably be a Japanese Arisaka. The owner is probably still nearby. Or at least recently deceased, he never knew the war was over. ;)

Hmm... that's tough.
I'm thinking an AK47, 7.62x39.
Reliable gun, caliber sufficient for medium game hunting (if there is any on the island), and the gun is good for combat in case a crazy tribe of cannibals attacks.

Agreed on the AK-47.IM used to my sar-1 and i think it would fit me best for the same reasons as mentioned above.

A Garand with a Bayonet and plenty of tracer. However, if there is not a volleyball and a magic marker in there I'm going to start swimming until I find a better island.

spear gun
you on a deserted island, the only thing to hunt lives under water.
you may have fun shooting everything else, but you'll starve to death doing it.:uhoh:
