So your plane crashed on a deserted island...

If there's nothing on the island that can eat me, probably a reasonably tricked out 9x23.

If there is something that can eat me, probably something like a 45-70 with warm loads but not too crazy... something that would be fun to shoot and would be decisive against many animals at close range. Rifle would be something like a Marlin 1895 Cowboy with a receiver sight.

...

a 25mm Phalanx....attached to a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier :D

Now to push the thing out of the cave....

Keep in mind that all you get is the gun and an endless supply of ammo ... nowhere did I read anything about there being a gunsmith and a bunch of gun fixing tools, spare parts and repair manuals in that cave, so I'm not so sure I'd be all that excited by finding an AR, AK or any other semi auto.

If the island is large enough to support some decent sized game (like boar) then I'd prefer a bolt action rifle in .30-06, .308, .303 or 8mm.

I'm thinking a Remington 700 in stainless steel with the synthetic stock chambered in .308 would be an excellent choice.

If all you're going to hunt is birds and such, then maybe the 12ga would be the way to go (a nice marine shotgun, again in stainless steel with synthetic furniture).

For the most part, I imagine a firearm under such conditions would be primiarily used for entertainment. In which case a handgun would probably be more fun for me.

Can I just trade the gun for Heidi, or a supermodel of choice? :D

If not, let me think and I'll get back to you.

I was doing ok until bears, zombies, mutants ended on the island...might as well have a partner, to help figure out things. Gather firewood, make traps, forage for edible plants, gather water, make a bow and arrow, a spear...survival stuff. Uncle always said no harm in picking a partner with money looks and brains. Besides, I figure the authorities are going to look for Hiedi ,or similar supermodel. I figure keep them company, share bodily warmth , and stay close...when they come for her, I too will be rescued. ;)

Was this after a three hour tour? And if so.....could Ginger be my rifle bearer?

oh yeah....How about some kind of over/under rifle and shotgun combo?
Let's say 30-06 over a 12 gauge, and since this is a fantasy make it stainless

Your found gun will be worthless without lubrication!

If I were to be trapped on an island, with a gun, ammo, and oil. I would pick a S&W 6" 686.

I am really sort of surprised at some of the answers I have seen. I would figure more people would have picked a 12 gauge shotgun. Between birdshot, buckshot, and slugs, there is very little that you could not get done in a pinch.

Its a deserted island, which means no people, so why pick and AR15, M1A, M14, or AK?

A high powered rifle would also be a bad choice in my opinion. Sure you could hunt big game, if there is any, on the island, but thats it. Hard to shoot birds and rabbit sized game with a 30-06. And how many meals could you eat off a big game animal before it got pretty ripe on a south pacific island?

I think a 12 gauge is the best choice. My second choice would be a nice 22 LR rifle.

Well to go along with the orignal posters perceived intent I will have to say....

Remington 870 Marine Magnum 12 gauge with a my ammo being a mix of shot/slug/and most importantly 12 gauge parachute flares.

The gun is simple, corrosion resistent, manually operated and provides me with a firearm equally adept at hunting small animals, such as birds, to large dangerous game to self defense should any pirates land on my island.

The parachute flares give me the ability to signal or create fire quickly if necessary.

So at this point I have shelter in my cave.
Warmth from the fire I can create.
Food from the birds that I can zap from the sky.
All I really need is fresh water so assuming there are no inland water supplies I will have to make due with the dew inside the damp cave and any rain water. Basically I am hoping that if God was good enough to give me all this ammo that he could at least make it rain from time to time too.

Mmmmmm coconut crusted tropical bird fire grilled. Sounds pretty good.

To answer the firearm lubricant question there are probably enough plant life/natural oil producing or somthing to that effect that would work in a pinch. Coconut oil is reasonably slippery and as long as we are talking manually operated arm such as a pump shotting or single shot break open then you should be just fine.

If flare guns and/or potato guns are out of the question, I would want the simplest bolt action or single shot 22lr known to man. The type that could hang on a wall in a cabin for decades and still fire on the first pull of the trigger.

Better yet, I'd rather have a recurve bow. It's not as sexy as a gun, but you could concievably keep it functioning in a jungle environment. No barrels to clean, no metal parts to corrode and fail, etc. You can make new arrows, strings, and even the bow itself. Millions of native peoples can't be wrong...

M79 40mm grenade launcher. It is simple and rugged. I can use fish or nut oil to lubricate the mechanism.

I would need an appropriate mix of ammo.

40mm buckshot rounds for any large dangerous creatures.

40mm birdshot rounds for birds (better then Preacherman's puntgun)

40mm flares for signaling and starting fires (I'm no boyscout)

40mm HE for "fishing" and to use as an ax. (again, not a boyscout)

.....and I am damn sure opening that package that Tom Hanks left closed through the entire movies since you just know that it was a solar powered, radio-satellite phone complete with crash resistent/waterproof packageing, charged batteries and copy of the white pages.

Yep the package gets open even if I have to use my afore mentioned 870 Marine Magnum to do it.

There.

Chris

I'd have to go with the Remmy 870 with 00 buck. I would need something to defend myself against those nasty Cave Ninjas

and spiders oohhhhh I hate spiders, cave spiders, lawn spiders, desert spiders, I hate them all. I will definitely need some smaller shot for them.

Ehhh

Spear gun. The food is underwater.
