I’m glad this thread started it’s making me rethink my habits.I hunt and fish alone in Vermont, New hampsire and Maine most of the time . The reason I go is to be alone.I’ve ben this way since I was a kid every where from Cicle City Alaska and all over the lower 48.I’m often miles from my van.I carry my bow and a large revolver or my rifle and a 22 2 knives trash bag maybe a flashlight never seemed to need a compass,But my van has everything food for days stove sleeping stuf for the season shovels axe chainsaw and a Rokon.I might be gone for a night or a week with no plan or any one knowing where I am.This habit of mine is very inconsiderate to my family and now I have adopted my 10 year old nephew.Heck most of the time my van is miles off the road and would never be found.Last fall he showed me how to match our phones so he could find me if needed, but phones seldem work where I go.This fall I will turn 60 years old just before rifle season opens I am going to change my ways and make plans maybe even look at a map. This getting old and haveing responibiltys is getting old already I might even have to get a canoe that holds 2 or a camper.I still fill 30 years old.I’m going for a walk tomorrow And I’m not sayin where,I ain’t 60 yet

You may want to look at Rhino radios with GPS and tracking capabilities. A gadget i got for xmas is called a "tile" its just a small square locator beacon that can be synched to a cell phone. I use mine to find my lost jeep keys in the house, but I think some models can give a remote location to the "tile" from a long way away.

I carry a vanquest gear EDC organizer on all of my hunts with my most important items in it.
https://www.vanquest.com/products/edcm-husky-2-0-edc-maximizer-organizer.html
I can hang it from my belt and head out the door, or I can stick it in a hydration pack with some food for a longer day in the woods, or a larger pack for more serious trips. Having all of the important items in one pack that goes every time saves a lot of trouble forgetting things, or trying to repack for different scenarios. This same pack also goes on the pommel of my saddle during trail rides.
Mine has:
ziplock bag with my license, tags, and some zip ties.
a pellet tin with 2 wetfire tinder cubes and a pack of waterproof matches
a pen
a lense pen for cleaning scopes
a ferro rod
a backup folding knife
a ziplock bag full of bandages, ibuprofen, moleskin etc-very basic first aid
an led flashlight and 2 spare batteries
a pocket sized double sided medium/fine ceramic sharpening stone from spyderco

My larger packs will have a folding saw, paracord, more extensive first aid, water purification etc. but the EDC pouch is perfect for keeping the necessities all together and ready to go.

The word "essentials " comes to mind. Meaning indispensable/necessary. Want vs need.
Basic items of course. That`s more an individual choice. Location could contribute to that.
Core items need to sustain one for who knows who long. Water /food are consumed....now what ?
