I was headed to the range this morning with the 444's and decided I wanted to shoot the 45-70's as well so to the bench I went. I loaded H4198 with Remington 300gr HP's in RP nickel plated brass. Had a good time before & during range time today!

Great pictures, thank you for posting them. It looks like you have a good space for reloading.

I used 4198 for a long time in the 45-70 before I tried AA5744, it's all I use now. If you get a chance give it a try and see if you like it better too.

Great pictures. What is your pet load for that particular bullet/powder combination? What gun and velocity are you getting. I have those same bullets/powder in Remington brass used in a Marlin 1895.

I've settled on 45.3 grains of H4198 under the 300gr Remington Jacketed HP. I use Winchester large rifle primers and it shoots 1.00 groups at 100 yards time after time. I haven't put them through a chrony so can't give you muzzle velocity.

I use it hog hunting but on deer I use the Hornady 350gr Interlock, less destruction.

BTW, I shoot nothing but ported Marlin Guide Guns for the 45/70.

And to think I was envious of your photo ability after your .444 thread. ;)
This one confirms it for sure.

Nice loading set-up too. :)

I'm finding H4198 & H322 are becoming my favorites with .45/70 as well.

Great post and pics 1895Gunner.

Nice Pictures!

I love loading for the 45-70. When you make a round you know you made something with some kick. Maybe too much some times.

I have been bouncing around between IMR 3031, RL-7 and H 4198. Been using alot of the IMR just because I have a bunch. The bullets that I have been shooting is the Missouri 405 coated flat nose.

When I bought the Marlin I was looking at the guide gun but ended up with the 22" barrel. I do not hunt. Really like the gun but it does need a recoil pad.

Great post and pics 1895Gunner.

Thanks guys, these pics are just from my iPhone. I'm retired now, for just over a year from Lockheed Martin - not a photographer BTW. Face it, it's the Nickel, Brass & Copper that caught your eye!

i was going to guess you worked in IT or a technical job. There is "order" evident throughout your process. The reloading bench is totally squared away and organized, looks like handmade shell holders, it just looks like you are a project oriented mind. :)

Ha, you got it right! I was a senior program manager for the last fifteen years. Thank you for your comments. I enjoy sharing pictures of the shooting sport & preparation for it.

I use AA5744 a lot. But with its availability becoming more restrictive and its price becoming much higher, I am going to go back to IMR4198. I also have some AA3100 which is close to the 4198 powders, but not identical.

Just to go back to the powder I'm now using, even though I'm now using AA5744 I was happy with 4198. I also used IMR3031 especially with jacketed bullets and it worked well too. I just like trying different powders and when I tried AA5744 I found it to be more accurate than the others and it felt different. If I had to do back to 4198 I would not be unhappy.

I agree it's good to know that you have choices on powder, I have several fall backs but I've come to like the H4198 in my;

444 Marlin
450 Marlin
45-70
458 Win Mag
& someday a 50 Alaskan

I've also settled on HP38 with a backup of H110 on my;

38 special
45 ACP
44 Mag
45 Colt

My 410 gets H110 with a backup of Lil'Gun

Of course I always keep Reloader7 on the powder shelf.

After running low on all powder six years ago I keep a "safe" inventory at all times now. Three years ago I made a three state drive with a BIL hitting every known LGS & big box store and came home with a trunk full. Of course now it is readily available so I do buy some every month. I'm thinking after this next election - well you know....

Forgot to compliment you on your oak loading blocks. Nice touch.
That's what most of my bigger caliber ones are made of, from several I made in high school shop class to several more my brother and I made in his cabinet shop years later.

I did have to re-ream most of them after years of absorbing moisture, but they do work well and add a nice touch.

Thanks for the note on the oak loading blocks. I actually bought them from a member over on the MarlinOwner forum before I got my wood working shop setup. I'm getting ready to start making them myself now. I do much prefer the wood blocks to store bought plastic or metal ones.

Do you load by volume? Or do you simply use a Lee Dipper to get the charge to the scale? (I do use a dipper to get my powder into the scale pan myself)

Maybe you can get my reloading bench organized like yours? Nice!
