Someone in my neighborhood called the police on me, my kids, and ....

I live in the country If I start shooting on a sat or sunday Pretty soon you will hear others up down road . No matter who starts always several more join in .
That seems to be a popular theme.
I've lived at and shot in the same backyard for fifteen years, and have noticed the neighbors shooting far more than they used to.
I know I've influenced a few through polite discussion over the years, but the amount I'm hearing now goes beyond that.
I consider those shots a very welcome sound.

This is a great story. We just made an offer on a 5 acre piece of land outside of city limits. I'm already looking to put up a berm somewhere for my own range. ;)

I live out in the country. A few years ago I loaded up 5 rounds for my recently arrived CMP M1 Garand to try it out. I have a 4' cubed box, 50 yards off my deck, filled with sand that is my impact zone. I have to replace the plywood over the target attach point periodically but this box stops rounds reliably.

Then there is another 700 feet to leave the property which goes up hill, and is backed by the rest of the section that isn't inhabited. IOW, a fairly safe shooting situation.

Well I touched off my 5 rounds, retrieved my target, put the rifle in the safe and was working on the computer when I saw deputy driving up my driveway.

So I go out to see what he wants, not really connecting shooting my rifle with his appearance, it isn't like touching something off is a unusual.

He asks me if I've been shooting, I ask why? He indicated he received a complaint from someone local that thought they were being shot at.

I told the officer that I have been shooting but I'm done for now. Rifle is put away in the safe. Would you like to see what I'm shooting at?

Officers indicates he would like to see it so I take him out to the box, show him the back side that doesn't have any holes in it and he starts talking about how he was first in his class shooting his pistol.

He tells me who called in on me and suggests I let the guy know where I'm shooting and that I'm not a threat and heads off.

So I stop by the guys house, older guy, I inform him where I'm shooting and he never gave me grief again. The guy had just moved in so he wasn't aware of me and my neighbors yet. :what:

My buddy had the same thing happen to him. The cops just did a safety check (said he had to do "something") and said have fun, then went and told the guy next door not to call anymore.

I had the same problem with my mothers neighbor, no I don't live there I lived in town and shes in the country. Anyway her neighbor was terrified at the time of our shooting. It interrupted her gardening and she was afraid for herself and family. The sherriffs drove by normally shortly after I shot a little bit but never stopped in.

She stopped in the other day and asked if my son and I still shot out there, which we do. My mom told her yes we still did, she informed my mom that it doesn't bother her anymore because our shooting doesn't last long. And she must of realized that the bullet would have to get through our backstop and then dodge ALOT of trees, make a left turn and dodge ALOT more trees and travel across another 15 acres to even end up on her property.
I think the new neighbors that moved in very near her helped a little. Apparently they have teenagers that really blast rap music constantly.

great story!

try giving the neighbor a call next time you shoot. to avoid another misunderstanding, but mostly to extend an invite!

I shoot at my house when I feel like it. I don't have a big yard but I live in a very rural area and have a mountain behind me as a backstop. One neighbor warned me about another neighbor who calls the police anytime a shot is fired. I've seen them drive by while and after shooting several times. Otherwise I never see LEOs around here. I'm a good 30 minutes from town. The LEOs have never said anything to me even when I'm standing in the yard with a gun. One deputy told me that they don't like coming down into the valley I live in without atleast 2 or 3 squad cars,so maybe that's why they haven't said anything. Evidently the mountain people around here have never been very warming to law enforcement.

Great story, and outcome, PcolaDawg!

Fortunately we can shoot in our backyard also. However, every time I start, an ATF agent has to interrupt - to shoot with us! My neighbor is an ATF agent and we both have fairly good ranges. He has some very cool toys, for sure. Great guy, seriously. That kinda breaks the stigma of jack booted thugs.

Our other neighbors about 4 miles to the east have some big artillery, some seriously big artillery! And I think they have some automatic weapons. I least I hope they do! I live about 4 miles west of the Quantico howitzer range. Almost every Wednesday, you can count on some sounds of practice from there with automatic fire every month or so.

That reminds me of living to north side of Columbus, GA with Ft.Benning to the south of the city. From our porch atop the hill, we could see the flash from evening artillery practice and then...wait for it... a distant muffled boom like far off thunder. Made some good army friends living there.

i have 150 acres and abut up to another 300 acre dairy farm and even i get the cops called on me sometimes when i shoot. i dont understand, its the weekend, and its a rural area, shooting happens, why call the state police?

I grew up in the country and now live in a suburb of Columbus. I miss the country for the freedom it represented and despise living in such a crowded community and plan to move back out to the country as soon as possible.

My brother in law lives not two miles where I grew up and the house next to him sold to someone who came from the city. They moved in during the winter two years ago and last spring we started to shoot clay birds in his field. They called the sheriff on us who shot a couple of rounds.

Unfortunately, they sold their house a year later. I guess country living isn't for everyone.

I'm sorry to ask a somewhat unrelated question, but what does it mean when someone refers to themselves as being "High road"? I don't understand it

Respectful, polite....all the traits that we like to see here on the fabulous High Road (.org) :)
