Something To Think About Actually Happened.

Why post when nothing happened?

I often point out the obvious, if I think my wife and daughter are not paying attention. Situational awareness is very important, alert prey are harder to kill and predators most often go after the one at the end of the line, not the first one that avoids them.

Things did happen, and all were good.

This was an example of when a member's strategies, tactics, and training were appropriate for the situation. And were implemented correctly and were effective.

We learn from discussing the wins, as well as the losses.
Well, yeah, and I do not want to criticize the poster for writing about it.

As I said before, I always try to notice things that may be worrisome. and whan they come up, I react--people sitting in cars, people driving around in parking lots, people seeming to be watching other people. Most of those incidents do not appear to me to be worth discussing, though they are certainly worth paying attention to.

I do not park near the edges of pariking lots, and if I did have to park in a lot known to be frequented by homeless people, I would be very careful about where I parked.

Maybe not everybody knows what they should be looking for.

We've had this discussion before. There's a reason why I park where I park.

This wasn't a huge deal it just gave me the opportunity to stop and think.

I was leaving the gym today and as I walked out to my car I realized in an almost empty parking lot there was another car with two guys just sitting in the front seat parked right next to mine.

Spoiler Alert Nothing Happened.

I'm pretty sure they were just getting high but it gave me an opportunity to stop and think and ask myself how I was going to handle it.

That particular instance I didn't have a choice I had to walk between both cars to unlock mine. I didn't acknowledge the guys in the other car. I didn't speak to them. I just kep my eye on them. I also pulled out my OC spray and had it in my off hand. I have no idea whether they saw it or not. It wasn't my intent for them to see it.

I popped my hatchback before I walked between the two cars and dumped all the unnecessary stuff that I had in my hands into it. Then I shut the hatchback. I kept the OCS spray in my off hand. I unlocked my door, got in, shut and locked it immediately behind me and drove away.

I'm not trying to make something out of nothing. The likelihood of it having been something was probably about equal to me hitting the lottery.

It was just an opportunity to thank my way through a problem
Just to throw another option out there, depending on how close to your vehicle you were when you saw them, you could have gone back into the gym. That's obviously a short-term solution, but sometimes that's all that's needed. If you were to become a target of opportunity, you would have made things more difficult for them by being in a public place as opposed to alone between two vehicles and outnumbered. Sometimes that's all it takes to cause them to change their plans.

Does your wife or daughter ever drive that car to the gym?

I came out of a store at night a few years ago. I had parked well away from other vehicles. The lot was mostly empty. When I came out a white windowless van was parked right next to my car. There were people in it. I went back inside and waited a bit. I told the clerk why. After about ten minutes the van left.

I might have said this earlier in this discussion.

James Yeager used to say that there's a little Rolodex inside your brain. And in an emergency your brain starts flipping through that Rolodex looking for an appropriate response. He also said that if your brain doesn't find an appropriate response it will continue to cycle through the cards and you will freeze.

That's why I posted this nothing happened, after action review.

Who knows, somebody might read your post and 6 months from now the same thing is going to happen to them and when their brain starts flipping through that Rolodex they're going to remember your post and they're going to go back inside the store.

Some people, not getting a "appropriate response" might just do something unusual instead and go "off script" instead of freezing.
