Following my current practice of getting when I can I picked up a brick of CC 400 SRP today north of Dayton. Most I've paid for primers to date, but also the only ones I've found in 4 months. Didn't see any on the shelf, didn't think to ask, but my wife asked the guy behind the gun counter. He initially said they don't get many primers in...just a few bricks at a time. Then, the proverbial light bulb went off over his head...I actually saw it...and he asked what kind. So I said small pistol or small rifle, doesn't matter. He went to the back and came out with the CCI 400. Didn't want to choke on the price...and there was only tax involved, no shipping or Hazmat, so $58.84 out the door was tolerable. My last brick of CCI 400 I bought in 2018 for $35.20 so it was a 67% increase. Considering that bullets are nearly 100% higher I just bought them and was grateful. I went to 2 other shops and they had nothing.

I'm curious if people had the opportunity to buy a pallet for like 5k if they would do it and try to explain to the significant other later... call it an investment or whatever

I went into my LGS today just to browse! They had about 20K LPP sitting there! I asked about the price and he said $100 per 1K. I said thanks but no thanks! I refuse to pay that for a brick of any primers! He said they paid not much less than the $100 to get them in the store. It's my guess that they found them locally to simply put on their shelf as inventory and suck people in. I will not be going back to that LGS if they want to put primers on their shelves at that price to resell.

I don’t see the primer shortage resolving itself anytime soon and here’s why.

Those of us caught with their pants down this time around are going to ensure it doesn’t happen again. Reloaders in that boat are going to lay down a large stockpile as a cushion.

Even if the current situation resolved itself...covid under control...courts being 2A friendly and antis getting set back... our community is going to keep emptying those shelves until we feel we have the necessary bench stock to weather the next crisis.

I’m sitting on 20-22K Primers..luckily I learned a little from the previous go around of Sandy Hook etc.....mostly pistol with maybe 2K small rifle. I’m beginning to think I need to increase that when they become available again just as the set aside for the NEXT crisis. And as it stands now, it appears there’s always going to be a NEXT one...only thing in question is when.

Mind you, I’m shooting still and just gifted a friend 1K WLP so he could reload.45 Colt since he can’t find ammo...also gave him the press and dies to facilitate that.

Crazy to think this hobby requires that type of expenditure and level of planning.

KCofOhio.... that’s a valid point. What’s changed is that primers have become de facto currency.

I’ve seen numerous adds popping up lately on local gun sites like... “have 3 bricks of CCI SRP’s... trading only for quality 1911s or factory spec ARs...no frankenbuilds etc”. That’s something I’ve never seen before and is a recent trend.

Locally the highest asking price I’ve seen for Primers is $400 for a brick of 1K. Now, whether they will get that is another story.

do what you must...

but don’t over pay, this too shall pass!

make every practice round count. Dry fire in between shots. Use a airsoft replica between shooting session. just slow it down people!

In normal times I agree, but these are not normal times. The question now is what is over paying ? If you're lucky enough to catch primers on PV, Midway or another online retailer, with the one brick limit and shipping you'll be well over the $58 dollar price the OP paid. At some point we will all run out of primers and will have to restock. With the covid uncertainty and an anti 2A government until at least the mid term elections, $60 primers may be the new normal.

The post "primers preorder" just two post above this one mentions a site that has them (SPP primers) $60 per 1k. Several of us are making the purchase. I myself went in for 5k spp, came to $300 +$15 shipping cost, says should ship in the next couple weeks (fingers crossed). Thats really not that bad, considering here in Boise Idaho youd be hard pressed to find a brick for under $150 and thats if you can find them, its disgusting!

We are our own enemies! Instead of over paying for primers and ammo. Send money to your state 2A group who are doing the fights for us! What’s all the ammo and primers going to do if it’s all illegal

Remember that manufacturers announced earlier this year that prices were going up. I believe vista said all of theirs would be going up 15%. Think about it. Manufacturers increase 15%, distributors will have to increase and finally retailers will. Personally I don’t think we will ever see primers under $45 again from the American brands.

Watched 1,000 LR primers sell on GB yesterday for 12 cents each, plus the shipping. Lowest I've seen lately for that standard quantity. They had been 15 to 18 cents.

Still double retail, but profit to profiteers is gonna get tight if prices keep sagging. When you can double or triple your money, there is no end to the incentive to sweep the shelves. But if profit to profiteers gets tight, they may leave them on the shelf. Do that and the needs of the end users....even the hoarders and preppers.....should quickly get filled. All aspects.

We may be closer than we know. Hearing reports of both powder and primers starting to show up.

Places like powder valley ship up to 48 lbs on one $20 Hazmat fee, so if you don’t have your order at that weight, you are wasting money. Need a pound of powder, just need 47 lbs of other stuff to go along with it.

I don’t talk to Mrs. Morris about those acquisitions anymore than she consults me before buying shoes, purses, salon visits, etc.

Folks that shop like that are not the ones starting the sky’s falling threads.

I agree as well. I would hope that many of us on here do support 2A groups.

I see so many post saying stop overpaying. My question was what is considered over paying? I can't justify using 2019 prices as a reference for primers, they may never drop to that amount again.

I have enough powder and primers to keep my family shooting for several years. At some point I'll have to buy more to keep enjoying our hobby.

I’m still sitting comfortably with pistol primers but could use some more LRP. Might need to start trading for them if things don’t settle down by fall
I'm the opposite - plenty of LRP but low on SPP/SRP. I'm sitting okay on LPP and have shelves of ammo ready-made and boxed. The doesn't' mean I'm not going to ask for more, it just means I'm not willing to put up with gouging or rudeness to get more.

I’m going with a hard number. 20% over is overpay

if they could make money in 2019... they can in 2021

If you're paying more than 19cents a gallon for gas, you're supporting price gougers!
Eggs shouldn't be more than 10cents a dozen, either! And more than A DOLLAR A GALLON FOR MILK!!!???? Insanity! Don't pay it!

If ya'll think I'm being sarcastic, ask an old(er) person how much they used to pay for all them things. I remember going through the grocery store and thinking 15 cents a pound for chicken was just wrong.
