My wife and I took the CWP course for concealment carry on Saturday. My wife has only been shooting handguns since about late Oct, so she was a bit nervous. We both passed, but now need to get all of our paperwork squared away and send it into SLED. We figure we should have our permits in 90-100 days, depending on if we get our paperwork out this week.
I think my wife did quite well, considering her experience, but she doesn't feel like she did. She got a 94% on the written test and an 80% on the shooting (needed a 70% on both to pass). We both shot, as the instructor wanted us to, which was with a certain stance and by pointing. He wanted fairly rapid firing and did NOT want us to aim. Vicki did well, as she was usually the first to fire a shot and the first to complete her number of rounds in her group. Some of the guys were taking their time, and aiming, so, naturally, their groups and scores were a bit better than hers. As an example, when I shot, I fired five rounds, dropped my mag, and holstered my Colt Officer's ACP into a side holster, and had to wait up to FIVE seconds before the last guy finished his last rounds. Vicki was often waiting 2-3 seconds for the others to finish. I was quite proud of her scores, but she's still not too thrilled with them (she is always comparing herself to me, and I scored a 100% on the written and 96% on the firing). I just keep reminding her that, in a "fire fight" she'd had probably dropped everyone else in the class because of her speed and accuracy.
Now, I've got plenty of different guns for carry purposes, depending on what I'd be wearing. Surprisingly, on the way home from the class, Vicki said she may have to find a smaller gun than her S&W 5903 if she plans on carrying on her instead of in her purse or the diaper bag. I was glad to hear this. Now, we have an "excuse" to start looking at more guns.
Maybe we will look into some IDPA shooting.
