Almost, realistically, 95% of the american hunting population will never have to utilize more than what is offered by the .30-40 krag. The other 5% need a .30-06-.375 mag. The o'connor kool aid was never NEEDED by anyone or anything, that concept is flawed by everything that's ever evolved from the .308 or .300 sav cases, if they can't do it in one flavor or another with modern technology, the .270 won't either.

Replace 30-40 Krag with Honda Accord and 30-06-.375 mag with a Ford F-150 and your opening statement would be equally right for our driving needs too, and yet we collectively would reject it as whole heartily as most will reject your rifle premise.

Variety is the spice of life! Why do you like bland food? More importantly why do I have to eat your bland food? :D

I like plenty of spice, and will happily share it, I simply disagree with the o'connor cult.
I run a 2500 cummins ;) you're welcome to eat as you wish, I do caterings, perhaps an appetizer of .22-250, an entree of .280ai, side of .223, and for dessert, a light hot 6.5 leopard? If you wish to order off menu, we, unlike some rifle companies, encourage it!

Agree.

... or the .270 WIN for that matter.

But what a waste of powder!!!!
@Hog huntin Harry
There's definitely a cool aid afoot. Similar facts and opinions have been documented in favor of other cartridges and yet the o'connor cult can't seem to see them, rather they claim theirs as the awesomest, for xyz even when literally handfuls of other cartridges fill specific rolls better :thumbup::neener:

Disagree.

P.O. Ackley determined that the .270 WIN was a perfectly balanced cartridge, in no need of improvement.

And max loads for both the light and heavy bullet loadings fill the case with powder that completely burns w/in std. length Bbls.

It was actually one of, if not the first belt-less magnum.

My family had a subscription to Outdoor Life during the 60's, so I read a lot of O'Conner. He also wrote about other fine cartridges like 257 Roberts, 7mm Mauser, and 30-06 and I always thought that he knew his stuff. My remembrance of him was more about his well written articles on hunting in which he generally carried a .270 and reported on it's performance on game. Sheep, elk, Coues deer. Remember that in the 1960's many of the other flat shooting rounds were just coming out or were still being developed.

He influenced me alot in my early years. I wanted a M70 but chose 30-06 instead. I'm not one bit sorry with either choice.

PO said that about most over bore cartridges if im remembering correctly what ive read. He didnt want to AI the .243 as well.

Match accuracy and practical hunting accuracy... are vastly different.

People that whine about a hunting rifle not shooting sub MOA... are deranged.

As the .280 has its factory load pressure issue, the 7mm-08 is a reasonable alternative.

But to choose the .308 over a .30-06, in a bolt hunting rifle, solely on the grounds that it is inherently more accurate...?

Nonsense.

I guess you don't care about your shots on game but I do. Besides I have killed lots of deer with a 30-06. I said I like it. You don't seem to understand my posts. Deranged? maybe you don't know me. But I am not stupid and not a fan boy who claims that a .270 is a magnum.

Well...

You certainly had trouble understanding my post.

Maybe you should re-read it.

(and the .270 WIN - is a magnum... just not a very big one)

:D

Never thought of a 270 Win as a Magnum, just a full-power long-action bottleneck rifle cartridge. The 7mm Remington Magnum always seemed to be where the Magnums started IMHO. I admit it's arbitrary and many look down on kinetic energy as a measure but to me a magnum centerfire rifle cartridge needed to be able to push solidly over 3000 ft-lbs of muzzle energy with a bullet over 150 gr. If it make you feel any better 30-06 falls short too IMHO but gets very close.

That said I do own a 270 Winchester a nearly Jack O'Connor quintessential 270 Win, a 1956 Winchester Model 70 in 270 WCF and would hunting anything in North America with it. It does not get used much since it seems overkill for Tennessee whitetail at the ranges I hunt.

Yall dont know what your talking about!!!!!

It AINT a Magnum unless its has Magnum in the name....like the 222 Remington Magnum or the 224 Weatherby Magnum....Even the Lapua or 50 bmgs arent Magnums.
That's why I can tell people my .375 Ruger isn't bad to shoot, cause hey it's not a "Magnum"!!!!
