-If I can't go out and buy a brand-new pistol with 30-round clips that fires armor-piercing ammo, then why can I go to the hardware store and buy a powder-activated nail gun? In fact, you can even buy a straight-line style that is concealable in a coat sleeve! Meeting up with a nasty fellow in a dark alley who knows his nailguns would be a Bad Day Indeed. .......Seriously, a co-corker and I got on this subject a while back, and were wondering how it is that a common nailgun escapes ATF regulation.
-Or does it?
Are powder-caps regulated? Do they require a license to buy? I have never owned one so I do not know....

Nope. Home Depot, Lowes, etc., will sell you all the powder nailers and charges you can afford. No restrictions on purchase.

Some state, Massachusetts for instance (if I recall) does have a licensing requirement for powder actuated fastening devices. I believe you have to take a course to become licensed to operate a PAF device.

EEK! Funny you should mention it.....Nail guns are nasty! Just last week a carpenter on the job(breaking all the rules)while having his finger on the trigger,bumped his leg...you guessed it,a framing nail right through his femur!!! 6 months ago,my boss's uncle(while borrowing the boss's gun)shot his nephew in the neck!,luckly missing all important stuff,surgery,but no long term damage. Then there was the newbie who nailed his foot to the floor during break.....It goes on and on. Funny, but i never met a shooter who has had a AD with a nail gun.

It does seem pretty obvious that anything that can put a framing nail through a 2x4 can do the same to most anything else it comes in contact with.

Seems to me it is rare to have a fatality via a nailgun. Perhaps if you had more bullet-shaped "nails"? Or is the charge just too weak compared to smokeless power?

I think the lack of fatalities is due to shot placement. Most folks aren't shooting COM or going for a head shot when they hit themselves or somebody else with a nail gun, it's just an accident caused by negligence. Now if people started trying to commit murder with nail guns I think you'd see the level of fatalities rise dramatically.

if you mananaged to hit an artery it might be fatal
but with some first aid and a proper ER
the injury is going to be minor

heck, a few years back, there was the dood that chop sawed off his hand
and he nail gunned his head to stop the pain

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- A construction worker accidentally cut off his hand with a power saw and then shot himself in the head with a nail gun several times, apparently hoping to end his pain, police said.

William Bartron, 25, had at least a dozen 1-inch nails protruding from his scalp, police said. He underwent surgery to reattach the hand and was hospitalized in stable condition Wednesday, said his employer Greg Soltis.

Bartron severed his hand Tuesday while using a miter saw in the basement of another man's home, police said.

After finding Bartron, the man called 911. Soltis arrived a short time later.

Soltis said Bartron had shot several nails into his head with a pneumatic gun "because he could not stand the pain from the amputation," according to police.
