A couple of people on these forums have mentioned that you can special order firearms from Walmarts that no longer sell them in-store. I was told you can ask them for the special order catalog and they will give it to you from behind the counter, you look through and find what you want, give them the order number and in the matter of a week or two, you get a call that your gun is in and ready for pick up.

Well... I just talked to sporting goods "experts" at 5 local Walmarts and by the look they gave me you would have thought I just asked them the square root of maple syrup. No one had a clue about this mystery catalog. Some locations said it doesn't even make sense that a catalog would exist because firearms aren't allowed on the premises so even if they were able to order a firearm it couldn't be delivered to that store.

So, I guess I'm out of luck. But I was just wondering if my area (MI, just north of Detroit) is the only area that doesn't do the catalog or if this is fairly common.
I assume this isn't possible, but could I call up a store that someone knows has the catalog and order it over the phone to be delivered directly to me?

On a side note: Does anyone know if this special order catalog has the Pardner Protector in it? It's the gun I'm looking at getting right now and I can't find it for under $220 in my area. I see posts on here all the time where people are getting it for $140 out the door.

You can only order and/or take delivery of firearms at stores that carry firearms, because Wal Mart does not have anyone with an FFL at the stores that do not sell firearms. You have to take delivery of a firearm, in person, from an FFL holder, and they have to call up and get approval from the instant check network before transferring it to you. In some states there is even more to it - like waiting periods, etc. Note: WalMart quit selling firearms at some stores strictly as an economic decision.

Up until a couple of years ago, the special order catalog was available online. I just looked and it seems to have disappeared. With many WM locations getting out of the gun business, this is not surprising.

If you ask me, it's just as well. I've bought a few guns from WM in the past, and let's just say that every time, the experience was EXCRUCIATING.

The last time was a few years ago when I bought a Henry Lever .22. From the time I picked out the gun til the time I walked out of the store was well over an hour. And I have a CCW permit.

Your time is worth something. Support a GOOD (IF you can find one) local gun store in your area.

The internet is also a great place to find what you want and HERE'S A SOURCE to find an FFL in your area. Around $25 is a reasonable fee to transfer a firearm.

I never special ordered any guns from WM. I don't think it would be worth the hassel. I cured all my problems with buying Wal-Mart guns. From the agonizing paperwork to faulty firearms to the escorted march to the door. I simply go elsewhere.

Don't feel bad, Shpa - I asked a Walmart gun expert at our local store (sells guns) if he could order a Winchester SX-3. His reply, "Winchester went out of business years ago."

If there are any Dick's sporting goods around your area try giving them a call. I see alot of NEF pump guns for sale at the one near me. If the price is right maybe you could have them order you a protector. I bought a single shot pardner at Dick's for $119 which I thought was a decent price.

you are lucky around here they want 275 bucks for a protector. and my walmart stopped sellin guns a year or 2 ago and they said they will never have them again due to leagl reasons.

I just picked up a Maverick 88 Field from wallyworld. They do have the special order catalog behind the counter, but that may only be at stores that carry guns. The Security 88 wasn't in the book, and neither was the Pump Protector. I did take in the UPC numbers for both of those HD shotguns, and they appeared in the computer system ($197/Maverick 20", $170ish for the pump protector) but when they called the supplier of the Pump Protector the manager was told that they are not allowed to order the Protector.

If you are not as concerned about brand, you can pick up the Maverick 88 Field ($177) and then ship the new 28" barrel back to Mossberg, and they will ship a shorter one back to you (I have a 20" vent rib accu choke on the way from them, for free).

I like Bud's. I live just outside Cincinnati on the other side, but with the cost of gas it's still cheaper to buy thru the mail. They already have my FFL's info on file, so it's almost too easy.

Thanks for the link to Buds, I found some random guy in my area on their FFL list that will do it for $15. So I'm looking at $193 total (includes $2 for shipping insurance), I think that's the best deal I'm going to find.

Side note: My local Gander Mountain charges $75 for FFL transfers. 0_o

Yikes.

I just googled "Buds Gun Shop Complaints" and a ton of stories popped up, lots of unethical accusations. Looks like a lot of people have had a really bad experience with them (which surprised me with how often I hear it recommended here).

I'm starting to wonder if it's worth saving $20 or if I should just drive 15 minutes down to my local Dick's sporting goods and pick it up there.

Keep in mind that the number of horse's asses is always greater than the number of horses. I know at least ten other people who have used them, and a couple of guys have been to the store and bought, and they are all happy.

If you drive to Dick's you can walk out the door with it (assuming you don't have waiting periods) and a box a shells and go have fun at the range. Plus there is always a chance of stuff getting broken in delivery, or you get one that's scratched up already.

That's wierd.

Walmart had that section online only 2-3 weeks ago, I know because I was looking through it at the shotguns.

If you search for "Rifles" it still lists the link to the custom order guns page, but it redirects you to the homepage

I'm sending them an email to ask what the heck is going on.

That's what I was thinking. I'm trying to do this as cheap as humanly possible, but it's probably worth the $20 to get it from a store and walk away with it same day without worrying about damage or mailing it back if something is wrong or whatever. Plus the guy I found that would transfer it for me for $15 sounded a little shady on the phone.
I think I might go the big store route.

I have special ordered a coupla firearms from our local Wallyworld(a Remmie 870 and a Henry lever). Altho the Department Manager was the only one that could order them, the paperwork was done as quickly and as effortlessly as my local gun shop. Once I paid for the gun at the Sporting goods counter, the box was taped shut and I walked thru and outta the store by myself. In both instances I saved almost $50 over buying from my regular gun shop and in both cases the owner of that gun shop told me the price I paid at Walmart, was cheaper than he could have bought the same guns for wholesale.

Thank you for your e-mail. We don't swap barrels , We have a model which is an 8-shot and comes with a 20" barrel. Model#31046 . Please contact your nearby Dealer so you can order this model .All our shotguns are currently in unusually great demand; we've increased production on all models and are shipping to distributors as best we can. Best option is to have your dealer order your model from his distributor(s) to get into the queue.

Subject: Maverick Field 20" Barrel

I am thinking about purchasing a Maverick Field model with a 28 inch vented rib barrel from Wal-Mart. A friend of mine informed me that if I send the unused 28 inch barrel back, I could exchange it for a new 20 inch vent rib accu-choke barrel? Is that true? Thank you.

Fall guy: True. I explained that to the clerk (Winchester --> USRA--> FNH, etc.) but he insisted there were no newly mfd shotguns bearing the Winchester name.

I've never ordered a gun from Bud's but all the people who talk about doing it on the boards seem to have good results. I can't vouch for them though. If you can find one for $20 more at a local store by all means get it. You might well need the help of a local dealer on some issue. But the thing with Pardner's is they are hard to come by. Gander Mtn. told me they had 16 in all of their stores in the whole country. They also told me there weren't any at the Columbus store too but I found two there. Still people have trouble finding the Pardners. I know I did.
I went to my local Gander Mountain a few days ago and they had 4 or 5. So between our two stores it looks like we have about half of the nations supply. ...or more likely, the guy that said that to you had no idea what he was talking about.

I just got back from Dick's with a Pardner Protector in hand. Got it for $220, after doing (probably too much) research, it was the cheapest around. I found it odd that the Dick's just one town over was selling the Protector for $250.

Anyway, I obviously haven't fired a round yet, but I'm pretty happen to have my first gun purchase under my belt.

Any recommendations for some low recoil HD rounds?

If anyone has seen this catalog, how extensive is it? What brands do they have, how good is the selection?

My biggest problem with Walmart is waiting 15 minutes for someone (who usually doesn't know anything about guns) to come to the gun counter to get ammo out of the case.

Just looked at the special order book couple days ago for a marlin 1894 in 357. asked the clerk at the counter, he opened a file cabinent got it and handed to me. told me half deposit up front remainder when came in usually within 6-10 days if they are in stock. took less then 5 minutes for him to call to verify if in stock and none were. price was $480.

they have a manual you can look through for special order guns that have alot of the guns, but there will be a few that are not in there that produce, just today I special ordered a savage Model MARK II-BTVS -- with AccuTrigger, you half to puy 50% down then wait a little bit, called the local big gun dealer in my area priced it at $491, the savagearms web site said suggested retail was $441, walmart is getting it comming my way for $345, tax was not added to any of these, my last 4 guns I have bought from them and saved loads, I live in a low populated area so there are not alot of compeeting on gun sales, so wal-mart can tear them up on price. I have seen this gun cheeper online, but after shipping and ffl cost, a problem with wal mart is there booklet it does not carry every gun the different brands can offer, and they do not have all the model numbers like looking online at the different brands, so you half to do some reading on what the gun has, if you check out the book there is a number at the bottom, call it and they know what they have in stock
