If you search for "Rifles" it still lists the link to the custom order guns page, but it redirects you to the homepage

I'm sending them an email to ask what the heck is going on.
Ya I get the same thing. Never knew that was there though. Would've liked to browse the shotguns online myself.

If anyone has seen this catalog, how extensive is it? What brands do they have, how good is the selection?

I've seen it. Several times in fact. From time to time it's right out on the counter, marked "Special Order" or something like that. It's a loose leaf notebook, about two inches or so thick. They carry most any brand of "hunting" type rifle or shotgun you can find most anywhere. Not all certainly but a good selection. They don't carry "black rifles" (or didn't but "black" rifles are more mainstream these days so that may have changed) or handguns.

I've never ordered anything from it but have considered it.

As for the doing the paperwork I've never seen much difference than any gun shop I've ever bought a gun at. They get someone (a manager) to go over the paperwork to make sure it's right. My gun shop does the same thing. I guess the only real difference is they carry the gun to the door for you, but so do a lot of "big box" stores like Gander Mountain. No biggie to me. I wish they'd carry the bag of dog food too.

I was with my brother when he ordered a CVA Optima Elite combo with the .50 cal and .30-06 barells. He paid for it up front, though he only was required to pay half, and the gun was there in about 3 days if I'm not mistaken. I was mad because I'd just bought the Optima Elite with just the muzzle loader barell at Gander Mountain a month before and he only paid $40 more than me. To buy a different barell, the cheapest I've found is $185 from Mid South Shooter Supply. It was easy and no hassle at all, and he saved $140. They can order a lot of stuff that they don't normally stock like the higher end rifles. Remington Mountain rifles and BDLs. I didn't check the prices on those, but I'm sure you could save some money there too. It's something I'll definately check when I'm ready to buy another gun.

I never special ordered any guns from WM. I don't think it would be worth the hassel. I cured all my problems with buying Wal-Mart guns. From the agonizing paperwork to faulty firearms to the escorted march to the door. I simply go elsewhere.

Yep me too...............for the exact same reasons.

im a dept mngr for walmart sporting goods and yes the sotre has to sell firearms to have the special order book, we get a new one every year with what we are allowed to oder from sports south, we have shotguns and rifles. there is a pretty good selection to choose from, but if its not in the book we cant order it. if there is something you would like me to look up for you i would be more then happy to and even give you the price its running at that time. to get a gun for the book you must put 50% down and pay the rest when picking up and after a background check. im in the state on va so the process is different from state to state.

"Well... I just talked to sporting goods "experts" at 5 local Walmarts and by the look they gave me you would have thought I just asked them the square root of maple syrup."

What is the square root of maple syrup, anyway?

I was in a local Walmart recently looking for a shotgun. The employee checked with the supplier and was told that the supplier was out of that particular gun. Do you know how often the inventory is refreshed? Does Walmart have an arrangement for x number of a particular gun for the normal hunting season and when they are gone, there are no more until the next season or is this something that is replenished on a regular basis? Just trying to figure out if I should check back with my store in a month or so.
